NTL SOFTBALL: ATHENS RUNS RECORD TO 4-0; TOPS WYALUSING 17-4 (12 PHOTOS) (2025-03-27)
Valley Sports ReportWYALUSING — Athens scored two runs in the top of the first inning, then blew the game open in the second on its way to a 17-4 win over Wyalusing here Thursday afternoon in NTL Large School softball action.
Sophomore McKenna Jarvis, junior Maddie Hiley, and freshman Memphis Paul combined for eight hits and eight RBI to support winning pitcher sophomore Gretchan Hiley.
With one out in the top of the first, Maddie Hiley walked, took second on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI single by Jarvis, who later scored on an RBI single by Paul.
Gretchan Hiley pitched around a hit batter and a walk in the bottom of the first, thanks to a pair of strikeouts.
In the top of the second, Maddie Hiley and Jarvis stroked one-out RBI singles to make it 4-0. With the scored 6-0, junior Savannah Finan hit a groundball two-run single up the middle to extend the lead to 8-0.
With two outs, senior Gretchen Schmieg lined a two-RBI single to right field, then scored on an error to cap the rally with Athens up 11-0.
In the home half of the inning, the Rams took advantage of a pair of Wildcat errors, but also rapped out four singles to close the gap to 11-3.
Wyalusing scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-4, but Athens blew the game wide open in the top of the fifth.
With two outs, junior Danica May stroked a two-RBI single into right field to make it 13-4. Two walks loaded the bases and Maddie Hiley ground an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 14-4.
After a passed ball scored a run, Maddie Hiley singled into left field to push the lead to 17-4. Moments later, with Maddie Hiley on second, Paul looped an RBI single into center field to cap the scoring.
Maddie Hiley struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the 10-run "mercy rule."
Jarvis singled three times, scored three runs, and had four RBI, while Maddie Hiley singled twice, scored three runs, and drove in two runs, and Paul singled three times, and knocked in two runs to pace Athens' 16-hit attack.
Schmieg tripled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs in the win, while May singled twice, scored two runs, and had two RBI, Finan singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs, senior Jules Pack singled and scored two runs, and Gretchan Hiley crossed the plate twice.
Gretchan Hiley allowed four runs — two earned — on six hits, while striking out 10 and walking one in five innings.
Athens, now 4-0, travels to NTL powerhouse North Penn-Liberty, which beat Troy 3-2 Thursday, on Tuesday.
