SECTION IV FLAG FOOTBALL: WAVERLY PULLS OUT 25-21 WIN OVER WINDSOR (2025-03-28)
Valley Sports ReportWINDSOR — Waverly took the lead in the final minute of the first half, and never trailed in a 25-21 win over Windsor here Friday night in Section IV flag football action.
"We are a work in progress," said Waverly coach David Shaw.
The Wolverines broke a scoreless tie with 17 seconds remaining in the first half on a 3-year TD pass from junior Brilynn Belles to freshman Lauryn Welles. Belles connected with junior Emma Cole for the conversion to make it 7-0.
The offenses came to life in the second half, with Windsor scoring three TDs of 72 yards or more.
The Black Knight scored on an 80-yard run on the first play of the second half, but missed on the conversion to close the gap to 7-6.
After an exchange of possessions, Waverly put together a drive that culminated with an 10-yard TD pass from Belles to senior Addison Westbrook with 13:54 remaining in the game to make it 13-7.
After a Windsor turnover, Lecksie Douglas scored on a 12-yard run with 10:20 remaining to give the Wolverines a 19-7 lead.
The Black Knights answered with a 72-yard TD run, and were successsful on a 2-point conversion to trim the deficit to 19-14 with 9:20 remaining.
The Wolverines put together a 4 1/2-minute drive, culminating on a 4-yard TD run by Belles to make it 25-14 with 4:53.
On the first play of the ensuing possession, Windsor ripped off an 80-yard run to close the gap to 25-21 with 4:34 remaining.
Belles completed 6 of 17 passes for 73 yards and two TDs, but was also intercepted twice.
Westbrook led Waverly with three receptions for 40 yards and one TD, while junior Leah Cole had two catches for 14 yards, and senior Brinn Cooney had two grabs for eight yards.
Kittle led Waverly's ground game with 132 yards on 13 carries, while Belles had 39 yards and one TD on nine runs, and Douglas added 33 yards and one TD on three carries. As a team, Waverly rushed for 220 yards on 25 carries.
Kittle led Waverly with six tackles, including one tackle-for-loss. She also had an interception and one pass deflection.
Junior Claire Clonch added four tackles, and Westbrook chipped in with three.
Waverly, now 1-1, plays its first home game Wednesday against Susquehanna Valley at 6:30 p.m.
