NTL BASEBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY TAKES ADVANCE OF SAYRE MISCUES IN 16-2 WIN (2025-04-01)
Valley Sports ReportSAYRE — Cowanesque Valley built a 9-0 lead, then salted the game away with a big fifth inning en route to a 16-2 five-inning win over Sayre here Tuesday afternoon in NTL Small School Division baseball action at Riverfront Park.
The Indians scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-0 lead, then tacked on a run in the third inning, and two more in the fourth to extend their lead to 9-0.
The Redskins got on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
Freshman Riley McGaughey worked a walk to lead off the inning, and junior Karter Green was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
After senior David Hall singled to load the bases, sophomore Shaine Strickland was hit by a pitch to force home Sayre's first run, and senior Mikey Griffin grounded out to drive home a run to cut the lead to 9-2.
CV took advantage of three Sayre errors to score seven unearned runs in the top of the sixth to make it 16-2, and bring the 10-run rule into play.
Sophomore Logan Zingeser walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but the next three Redskins were retired to end the game.
Hall's single was Sayre's lone hit in the loss, while Green scored their only run.
Green allowed six runs — all unearned — on four hits, while striking out four and walking two in two innings, and Strickland allowed 10 runs — all unearned — on seven hits, while striking out three and walking none in three innings of relief.
The Redskins committed 11 errors in the loss.
Sayre, now 0-5, return to action Thursday at unbeaten Athens.
