SECTION IV FLAG FOOTBALL: SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY TOPS WAVERLY, 19-7 (24 PHOTOS) (2025-04-02)

WAVERLY — Susquehanna Valley scored with 17 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 19-0 lead into the halftime intermission, and held on for a 19-7 win over Waverly here Wednesday night in Section IV flag football action.

"I think we continue to improve," said Waverly coach David Shaw, who put much of the blame on himself.  

"I feel like we played better tonight, but we struggled at times to pull flags in key situations," he said. "I need to do a better job of coaching the fundamentals of flag pulling and we will will continue to plug along.

"Offensively, we had our moments we just have to be more consistent," noted Shaw. "Again, this falls on my shoulders I need to do a better job of working on the finer points of the game and helping theses girls have success.

"The girls are great and continue to compete and work hard," added Shaw. "It will all pay off."

Susquehanna Valley put together a 10-play drive on the opening possession of the game, with Madeline Warner hooking up with Hayle Warner on fourth-and-goal at the Waverly 4 for a 4-yard TD. The extra point failed, and SV led 6-0 with 18:19 remaining in the first half.

The Wolverines picked up a pair of first downs on its first possession, but turned the ball over on downs just past midfield.

The Sabers moved into the Waverly red zone on its next possession, but Waverly senior Addison Westbrook stepped in from of a Miller pass inside the 10 to stop the threat.

Waverly was forced to punt on its next possession, and the Sabers drove to increase their lead, with Miller scoring on a 14-yard run to up the lead to 13-0 with 4:14 left in the half.

The Wolverines again punted on their next possession, and SV again drove to score, with Gracie Wallace busting loose on a 27-yard TD run with 17 seconds left to make it 19-0.

Waverly scored the lone TD of the second half with junior Brilynn Belles tossing a four-yard scoring pass to Westbrook. Belles connected with junior Mira Kittle on the extra point.

Bellis completed 18 of 32 passes for 153 yards and one TD, with one interception.

Westbrook led Waverly's receivers with six receptions for 66 yards, while senior Brinn Cooney had five grabs for 43 yards, freshman Lauryn Welles had three catches for 18 yards, and Kittle had two catches for 14 yards.

Waverly had just 76 yards rushing on 20 carries. Kittle led Waverly with 31 yards and seven Carris, while sophomore Avalynn Boots had 20 yards on two carries, and Belles tacked on 19 yards on eight carries.

Defensively, Belles led the Wolverines with 15 tackles, including six on SV's opening possession, while junior Claire Clonch had 13 tackles, Kittle added 11 tackles, and Welles chipped in with six tackles.

Waverly, now 1-2, hosts Chenango Valley Saturday morning.
