STAC BASEBALL: BASE ON BALLS DOOM WAVERLY IN 5-1 LOSS TO CHENANGO VALLEY (2025-04-14)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Chenango Valley took advantage of 11 base on balls from Waverly pitching in a 5-1 win here Monday afternoon in STAC Central Division baseball action.
Waverly loaded the bases in the top of the second inning, but came up empty, only to have CV take advantage of a similar situation in the home half of the frame.
Junior Ronin Ault stroked a one-out single in the top of the second, but was wiped off the base paths on a fielder's choice off the bat of junior Hogan Shaw.
After a single to right field by sophomore Justin Koenig, freshman Griff Walter worked an eight-pitch walk to load the bases, but a ground ball back to the pitcher ended the threat.
The Warriors loaded the bases with two outs, then worked a walk to make it 1-0, and scored two more runs on a Wolverine error to make it 3-0.
CV loaded the bases again in the bottom of the third, but Waverly starter Ronin Ault notched a pair of strikeouts, and a ground ball to Koenig to third base to escape the jam unscathed.
Waverly got on the board in the top of the fourth on a one-out single by Ault, who scored on an outfield error to close the gap to 3-1.
CV answered with two runs without the benefit of a hit — scoring on two walks, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.
Ault singled twice and scored one run, while Koenig singled and stole two bases, and freshman Matthias Welles and junior Hogan Shaw each added a single to account for Waverly's five hits.
Ault was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs — three earned — on one hit in 3 2/3 innings. He fanned four and walked 10.
Eighth-grader Axel Murray allowed one hit and struck out two in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Hogan Shaw walked one in one scoreless inning.
Waverly, now 3-3, hosts Chenango Valley Wednesday.
