THE SPORTS REPORTS: WAVERLY'S JOHNSON, ELMIRA'S SMITH NAMED ALL-REGION 'BOWLERS OF YEAR;' HORSEHEADS' CADY, ELMIRA'S GARDINER TOP NEWCOMERS (2025-04-16)
The Sports ReportsSTAC and Sectional IV titles, top-five finishes at States and some of the top individual scores in New York State helped lead to some tough choices for The Sports Reports All-Region Bowling teams in 2025.
Waverly's
Derek Johnson of Waverly is the "
Boys Bowler of the Year," while Elmira's
Madison Smith is the "
Girls Bowler of the Year."
Johnson averaged 228 on the year, second best in the STAC to earn the bowler of the year honors. The other first-team bowlers include Evan O’Hara of Owego, Alex Gublo of Elmira, Skylar Shadduck of Elmira, Connor Kotski of Owego and Michael Rennells of Horseheads, who finished third through seventh in the STAC respectively and Frankie D’Angelo of Elmira, who was ninth in the STAC.
Rounding out the first team are Corning’s P.J. Nelson and Zach Sturdevant, Elmira’s Trent Belloma and
Noah Cady of Horseheads, who is the "
Boys Newcomer of the Year." Cady had a 210 average on the year.
The second team includes 8th-grader Colten Santalucia and Maison Apgar of Waverly, Kody Floyd of Candor, who led the IAC in average, Bentley Goodier of Corning, Clayton Bowman of Horseheads and Zack Crown of Edison, who was second in the IAC in average, and Logan Card of Elmira.
Smith led the STAC in average at 208 for Elmira and she is the girls’ bowler of the year. Kylie Downing of Corning was second in the STAC and is on the first team with Bella Wood and Abby Hink of Elmira, seventh and eighth in the STAC.
Serenity Conklin and Karis Hayes of Waverly, Candor’s Kaitlyn Floyd and Rachel Hartman of Newark Valley, fourth and fifth in the IAC, and Jadyn O’Dell of Corning round out the first team.
The second team includes Elmira’s Madyson Wasicki, Candor’s Calli Marsh, sixth in the IAC, Waverly’s Ariel Houseknecht and
Evaya Gardner of Elmira, who is the "
Girls Newcomer of the Year" after averaging 156 this year.
Rounding out the second team are Waverly’s Rylie Witman, Owego’s Izzy Coveney and Elizabeth Reigle and Corning’s Ayden Hartford and Zoe Harmer.
