STAC TENNIS: NORWICH PULLS OUT CLOSE MATCHES IN 6-1 WIN OVER WAVERLY (2025-04-23)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly's top doubles team of senior Zach Moran and junior Nate McEwen won again, but Norwich pulled out several close matches in a 6-1 win here Wednesday afternoon in STAC tennis action.
"I couldn’t be happier about everybody’s efforts this afternoon," said Waverly coach Ron Chamberlain. "Everyone played their hearts out and a single game or two in each match could have turned most matches in our favor.
"The experiences of the season have brought our team together, and they are all growing as players.
"Their skill sets continue to improve, and now the strategy and determination the players bring to the courts will be the difference-makers in future contests," added Chamberlain. "I expect some more closely contested sets and matches in our last few dual matches of the season."
McEwen and Moran topped Norwich's Phin Rivenburg and Tim Guzenwich, 6-0 and 6-4 for their fourth win of the season.
Kristopher Deuel topped Waverly junior Logan Roskow, 6-4 and 6-4 in the first singles match, and Liam Hunter topped Waverly junior Finn Williams, 6-4 and 6-2.
Norwich's David Lawson knocked off Nate Kellogg 6-3 and 6-4 to complete the singles sweep for the Purple Tornadoes.
In the match of the day, Waverly's Kamden Sorenson and Rylie Witman topped Jacob Lobdell and James Ferracane 6-1 in the first set, but the Norwich duo answered with a 7-6 win in the second second, winning the tiebreaker, 8-6.
The third set was played in tiebreaker format, and Lobdell and Ferracane pulled out a 10-6 win.
Waverly, now 2-5, returns to action Thursday at Chenango Valley.
