STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY BUILDS BIG LEAD EARLY IN 9-4 WIN OVER DUNDEE-BRADFORD (22 PHOTOS) (2025-04-24)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly built a big lead on its way to a 9-4 win over Dundee-Bradford here Thursday afternoon in non-league softball action.
"It was a solid team effort," said Waverly coach Brent Doane.
Gonzalez swung the bat well," he noted. "Delaney Wheeler made a gem of a play for us at first base diving to make a catch on a bunt that was popped up.
"(Brinn) Cooney and (Meghan) Apgar were a bit snake-bitten tonight, ripping bullets in a couple of at bats that were right at defensive players for outs," he noted.
"It's a good non-league win," added Doane.
The Wolverines took advantage of four D-B errors in the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
Eighth-grader Taylin Gonzalez, who picked up the win in the pitcher's circle, helped her own cause with a two-out, two-RBI double to right field in the bottom of the second inning to make it 6-0.
Waverly tacked on two runs in the fourth inning on a two-out, two-RBI single by sophomore Lecksie Douglas to extend the lead to 8-0.
Gonzalez shut down Dundee-Bradford through four innings, but the Scots turned four hits and a base on balls into four runs to close the gap to 8-4.
Senior Makayla Esau singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, and later scored on a passed ball to give the Wolverines a 9-4 lead.
Gonzalez retired D-B in order in the sixth inning, then pitched around a one-out walk and single, to close out the win.
Gonzalez allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking four in a complete-game seven-inning effort.
Gonzalez doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, while sophomore Hannah Carpenter had two hits and one RBI, and Douglas singled twice and knocked in two runs to pace Waverly's 11-hit attack.
Senior Brinn Cooney singled and scored two runs in the win, while junior Maddie Cron, Esau, and 7th-grader Paige Bubniak each singled and scored one run, and junior Delaney Wheeler added a single.
Waverly, now 5-3, will host Elmira Saturday at 10 a.m., and Pittsford-Sutherland at 2 p.m.
