STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY FALLS TO ELMIRA, PITTSFORD-SUTHERLAND IN TESTA TOURNAM ENT (24 PHOTOS) (2025-04-26)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — After opening play Saturday morning with a 17-2 loss to Elmira, Waverly bounced back, but dropped a 19-17 slugfest to Pittsford-Sutherland here Saturday afternoon in the nightcap of the round-robin three-team Mary Testa Softball Tournament.
P-S won the day with a 6-1 win over Elmira in their match-up.
ELMIRA 17, WAVERLY 2Elmira scored six runs in the top of the first inning, and cruised to a 17-2 six-inning win over Waverly Saturday morning.
The Wolverines scored a run in the bottom of the second, but the Express answered with three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to take a 12-1 lead.
Elmira stretched the lead to 17-1 with five runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Sophomore Lecksie Douglas was 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI, while senior Makayla Esau doubled and drove in one run, sophomore Hannah Carpenter singled and scored one run, and junior Delaney Wheeler added a single to account for Waverly's six hits.
PITTSFORD-SUTHERLAND 19, WAVERLY 17
Pittsford-Sutherland, playing as the home team, built a seven-run lead after four innings, and held on for a wild 19-17 slugfest win over Waverly Saturday afternoon.
Senior Brinn Cooney and junior Maddie Cron led off the game with back-to-back singles. Cooney would score on an error, and Cron scampered home on a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of 8th-grader Taylin Gonzalez to take a 2-0 lead.
The Knights answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-2 lead, but the Wolverines answered with a three-run home run over the left-field fence by sophomore Hannah Carpenter to close the gap to 6-5.
P-S again had an answer with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-5 lead.
Waverly tied the game in the top of the third on RBI singles by Cooney and Carpenter, but the Knights took the lead for good with four runs in the third inning to take an 11-7 lead.
P-S extended its lead to 13-7 with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth inning, Cron led off with a single, Carpenter was hit by a pitch, and Gonzalez took a four-pitch walk to load the bases. After an errant pick-ff throw to third base allowed one run to score, 7th-grader Paige Bubniak walked to re-load the bases.
Senior Makayla Esau was hit by a pitch to force home a run that closed the gap to 13-9, and a pair of wild pitches scored runs to make it 13-11.
The Knights, as they did all night, answered, this time with four runs to take a 17-11 lead after five innings.
In the top of the sixth, Waverly loaded the bases, and scored all three runs on wild pitches to trim the deficit to 17-14, but the Knights tacked on two important insurance runs in the home half of the sixth to make it 19-14.
With two outs in the seventh inning, junior Delaney Wheeler reached on an error, and Cooney was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Cron, who ripped a shot to right field that turned into an inside-the-park home run to close the gap to 19-17, but that was all the damage the Wolverines could muster.
Cron was 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, six runs scored, and three RBI to lead Waverly's 14-hit attack, while Carpenter had three hits, including a home run, one run scored, and four RBI, and Cooney singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run.
Wheeler doubled and singled, and scored three runs for Waverly, while Gonzalez singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, Bubniak singled and scored two runs, and Esau singled and knocked in one run.
P-S banged out 19 hits, including 10 extra-base hits, in the win.
Waverly committed five errors in the loss, leading to 11 unearned runs.
Waverly hosts Susquehanna Valley Monday.
