NTL SOFTBALL: ATHENS ROLLS OVER HORNELL, 15-0; IMPROVES TO 13-0 (2025-04-30)

Valley Sports Report
HORNELL — Athens scored two runs in the top of the first inning, then added runs in bunches on its way to a 15-0 win over Hornell here Wednesday afternoon in non-league softball action.

Sophomore Gretchan Hiley was the beneficiary of the Wildcat offensive onslaught, earning the win with six strong innings. She allowed three hits, while striking out 11 and walking four.

Junior Maddie Hiley struck out one in a perfect inning of relief.

Athens, now 13-0, took advantage of a walk and two errors to plate a pair of runs without a hit in the top of the first.

Hornell's first two batters reached in the home half of the inning, but Gretchan Hiley struck out two, sandwiched around an infield pop out to escape the jam.

The Red Raiders put runners on first and third — on a walk and an error — with one out in the second inning, but Hiley registered a pair of strikeouts to escape unscathed.

Gretchan and Maddie Hiley reached to lead off the top of the third, and both scored on a two-run single by sophomore McKenna Jarvis to make it 4-0.

After Jarvis swiped second, freshman Memphis Paul stroked a single into left field to extend the lead to 5-0. With one out, senior Jules Pack capped the rally with an RBI double to make it 6-0.

The Wildcats cut down a runner at the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Gretchan Hiley notched a strike out to leave the bases loaded.

Junior Savannah Finan extended the lead to 7-0 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, and the Wildcats added four more runs — two on RBI singles by senior Gretchen Schmieg and Gretchan Hiley — with two outs to stretch its advantage to 11-0.

Andrea Davis added to the lead in the sixth inning with a two-RBI single, and Finan tacked on the final runs with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh.

Finan had three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and had three RBI to pace Athens' 12-hit attack, while Gretchan Hiley doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and senior Ella Coyle singled twice and scored two runs.

Paul singled, scored four runs, and knocked in one run in the win, while Jarvis singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, Pack doubled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Schmieg singled, scored one run, and had one RBI.

Davis singled and had two RBI for the Wildcats, and Maddie Hiley crossed the plate once.

Athens hosts Wyalusing Thursday, and Wellsboro Friday.
