STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY'S RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 9-6 LOSS TO CHENANGO VALLEY (20 PHOTOS) (2025-04-30)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Chenango Valley busted open a close game early, then held on to beat Waverly, 9-6, here Wednesday afternoon in STAC softball action.

The Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Brinn Cooney led off with a single, and junior Maddie Cron followed with a double.

With one out, 8th-grader Taylin Gonzalez plated Cooney with a sacrifice fly.

Chenango Valley, which loaded the bases in the top of the first, plated runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Warriors stretched its lead to 7-1 with four consecutive run-scoring singles, then added a run with a squeeze bunt, and capped the rally scoring on a wild pitch to make it 9-1.

Eighth-grader Ayla Wheeler relieved Gonzalez late in the fourth inning, and pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to give the Wolverines a chance to rally.

In the home half of the fourth, 7th-grader Paige Bubniak and sophomore Lecksie Douglas started the inning with back-to-back singles, and senior Meghan Apgar drew a walk to load the bases.

After Bubniak scampered home on a wild pitch, Cooney laced a two-out, two-RBI double into center field to close the gap to 9-4.

Cron kept the inning going with a single, but Waverly left the runners at first and third.

In the sixth inning, Waverly loaded the bases when Apgar was hit by a pitch, junior Delaney Wheeler rapped a one-out single, and Cooney worked a walk.

After Cron was hit by a pitch to trim the deficit to 9-5, sophomore Hannah Carpenter lined an RBI single into left field to make it 9-6, but that wall the damage Waverly could inflict.

Douglas led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle, but the next three batters went in order to end the game.

Cooney doubled and singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs, while Cron doubled and singled, and knocked in one run, and Douglas singled twice and scored one run to pace Waverly's 10-hit attack.

Apgar singled and scored two runs for the Wolverines, while Carpenter singled and drove in one run, Bubniak and Delaney Wheeler each singled and scored one run, and Gonzalez had one RBI.

Ayla Wheeler fanned two, walked one, and hit one batter in 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief.

Gonzalez was tagged with the loss.

Waverly, now 5-7, returns to action Monday when it hosts Owego.
