STAC SOFTBALL: OWEGO PULLS OUT 8-7 WIN OVER WAVERLY (20 PHOTOS) (2025-05-05)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Owego plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning to rally for an 8-7 win over Waverly in a back-and-forth affair here Monday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.
"We played hard tonight against a good Owego team," said Waverly coach Brent Doane. "We fought back at every turn, and in the end we gave ourselves a shot.
"We couldn't have asked for a better opportunity to end the game — two on, yes out and our 3-hitter at the plate," noted Doane. "Their pitcher is tough though.
"I am proud of how we played tonight," added Doane. "We have struggled of late , so to come out and play a good team like Owego to an 8-7 game is good to see."

After Owego plated an unearned run in the top of the first inning, senior Brinn Cooney led off the home half of the first with a double, and later scored on a two-out error to tie the game at 1-1.
The Wolverines took the lead in the second inning on a single by Melanie Skovira, a walk to Cooney, and a two-run triple by junior Maddie Cron to make it 3-1.
After a walk to junior Hannah Carpenter, 8th-grader Taylin Gonzalez stroked an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.
Waverly's advantage was short-lived, however, as the River Hawks answered with three runs in the top of the third inning, thanks in large part to a pair of Waverly miscues, to take a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cooney led off with a single, and Cron followed with a line-drive double.
Sophomore Hannah Carpenter gave the Wolverines a 6-5 lead with a two-RBI single to right field. With two outs, Lecksie Douglas flaired a singled to left field, and senior Makayla Esau laced an RBI double down the left-field line to make it 7-5.
Once again, however, Owego had an answer, taking advantage of a Waverly errors, and belting a pair of triples to score three runs in the top of the fifth inning, and take an 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Skovira worked a one-out walk, and Cron walked with two outs, but Owego reliever Carsten Crawford recorded the final out with a fly ball to center field to end the game.
Gonzalez was tagged with a tough-luck loss for the Wolverines. She allowed eight runs — only three earned — on six hits, with four strikeouts and four walks in seven innings.
"Taylin pitched a solid game for us and we had a couple real nice plays defensively from Megan Apgar and Lecksie Douglas," said Doane.
Cron tripled and doubled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, and Cooney doubled and singled, and scored three runs to pace Waverly's 10-hit attack, while Carpenter singled and drove in two runs, and Gonzalez singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run.
Esau doubled and drove in one run for the Wolverines, while Skovira singled and scored one run, and Douglas and 7th-grader Paige Bubniak each added a single.
Waverly, now 5-8, will host Chenango Forks Wednesday.
