STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY SNAPS FIVE-GAME SKID WITH 11-1 WIN OVER CHENANGO FORKS (14 PHOTOS) (2025-05-07)
Valley Sport ReportWAVERLY — Eighth-grader Ayla Wheeler pitched a complete game, and her classmate Taylin Gonzalez paced the Waverly offense in an 11-1 win over Chenango Forks to snap a five-game losing skein here Wednesday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.
"We played well tonight," said Waverly coach Brent Doane.
"Ayla Wheeler earned her first varsity win in the circle. She threw very well tonight, working hitters, and getting ahead in counts," noted Doane. "She also helped herself out going 2-for-4 at the plate.
"Taylin Gonzalez and Lecksie Douglas led the offense, and Hannah Carpenter had a good day, too," he added.
The Blue Devils took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Wolverines answered in convincing fashion with seven runs — all with two outs — in the home half of the second.
Sophomore Lecksie Douglas reached on an error to lead off the inning, and scored on a two-out RBI single by Wheeler to tie the game.
After a walk to senior Brinn Cooney, junior Maddie Cron doubled down the left-field line to make it 2-1. Two pitches later, sophomore Hannah Carpenter belted a two-run double, and Gonzalez followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 5-1.
After a walk to seventh-grader Paige Bubniak, Douglas flared a two-run single to right field to cap the rally.
Waverly added two unearned runs in the fourth inning on a misplaced fly ball, and two more runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Gonzalez.
Wheeler earned the win, allowing one run on four hits, with six strikeouts and just one walk in seven innings.
Gonzalez had three hits, including a double, two runs scored, and three RBI, while Carpenter had three hits, including a double, and two RBI, and Douglas singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in two runs to pace Waverly's 12-hit attack.
Wheeler singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run to help her own cause, while senior Makayla Esau singled and drove in two runs, Cron doubled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Cooney scored two runs, and Bubniak and Mel Skovira each crossed the plate once.
Waverly, now 6-8, returns to action Friday at Owego.
