STAC BASEBALL: OWEGO COMPLETES THREE-GAME SWEEP OF WAVERLY WITH 9-4 WIN (2025-05-08)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Owego clinched the Central Division title with wins over Waverly Monday and Wednesday. On Thursday, for good measure, the River Hawks completed the three-game sweep with a 9-4 win in STAC baseball action.
Owego jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Wolverines answered in the home half of the second with back-to-back two-out RBI singles by junior Cooper Robinson and Hogan Shaw to take a 2-1 lead.
The River Hawks answered quickly with six runs in the top of the third inning to take a 7-2 lead.. The key blow in the rally was a three-RBI double by Matt Higgins to give Owego a 5-2 advantage.
Hogan Shaw belted a two-out RBI triple in the fourth inning to close the gap to 7-3, but Joseph Palladino and Conlon Taylor answered with RBI singles in the top of the fifth to give the River Hawks a 9-3 lead.
The Wolverines left 12 runners on base in the contest.
Hogan Shaw tripled and singled and drove in two runs to lead Waverly's six-hit attack, while Robinson singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, sophomore Justin Koenig and freshman Sam Cheresnowsky each singled and scored one run, and freshman Jack Pipher added a single.
Sophomore Matthias Welles had one RBI, and sophomore Ben Shaw scored a run for the Wolverines.
Eighth-grader Axel Murray was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs — four earned — on four hits, while striking out three and walking three in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Freshman Griff Walter allowed two runs on three hits and one walk in 1 2/3 innings of relief, while Hogan Shaw allowed one hit and struck out one in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Welles struck out one and allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.
Waverly, now 10-6, returns to action Monday when it hosts Windsor.
