STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY POUNDS OUT 17-5 WIN OVER DRYDEN (2025-05-10)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly raced out to a quick 15-run lead, and cruised to a 17-2 five-inning win over Dryden here Saturday morning in non-league softball action.
The Wolverines had runners all over the bases in the win, with 18 hits, nine base on balls, and five batters hit by pitches.
After senior Brinn Cooney retired the Purple Lions in order in the top of the first inning, the Wolverines scored five runs on five hits in the home half of the inning.
Eighth-grader Taylin Gonzalez's two-RBI triple was the big hit in the inning, and sophomore Lecksie Douglas added an RBI single.
Cooney retired Dryden in order again in the second inning, and Waverly put the game away with 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Sophomore Hannah Carpenter started the scoring with an RBI triple, and scored on an RBI single by Gonzalez to make it 7-0.
Douglas belted a two-RBI triple, and senior Meghan Apgar followed with an RBI single to make it 10-0. With one out, three consecutive batters — sophomore Kaiya Horton, Cooney and junior Maddie Cron — were hit by pitches, the last two to force home runs to make it 12-0.
After an RBI groundout off the bat of Carpenter to make it 13-0, 7th-grader Paige Bubniak flared a two-run single to right field to cap the rally.
Dryden scored three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to close the gap to 16-5.
Junior Delaney Wheeler, who stroked an RBI single in the third, scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to make it 17-5 and end the game via the 12-run "mercy rule."
Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with a triple and a double, two runs scored, and three RBI, and Bubniak was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI, and Douglas had three hits, including a triple, two runs scored, and three RBI to pace Waverly's offense.
Carpenter tripled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs for the Wolverines, while Cron singled twice, scored three runs, and knocked in one run, Wheeler singled twice, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Apgar singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run.
Freshman Melanie Skovira singled and scored two runs in the win, while Cooney scored one run and drove in one run, and Horton crossed the plate once.
Cooney earned the win, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three in five innings of work.
Waverly, now 7-8, returns to action Monday when it hosts Windsor.
