NTL BASEBALL: WELLSBORO KNOCKS OFF ATHENS, 8-5 (2025-05-11)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — The Mascho brothers — Max and Marek — combined to limit Athens to three hits, helping Wellsboro to a come-from-behind, 8-5, win here Sunday afternoon in NTL baseball action.
With the win, the Hornets avenge a wild 16-10 loss to the Wildcats in the opening week of the season.
Athens scored a run on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Brady Flynn in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Hornets answered with four runs — three unearned thanks to an Athens error — in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead.
The Wildcats bounced back in the third inning with three runs to tie the game.
Flynn's two-run double pulled Athens within a run, at 4-3, and a Wellsboro error tied the game at 4-4.
Wellsboro started the fourth inning with four consecutive hits to take a 6-4 lead, then added a run on a passed ball to extend the lead to 7-4.
Athens scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Connor Davidson in the fourth inning to trim the deficit to 7-5, but Wellsboro tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fifth to make it 8-5.
The Wildcats were retired in order in their final three at-bats.
Marek Mascho started on the mound for the Hornets, allowing five runs — all unearned — on three hits, with one strikeout and one walk in 2 2/3 innings.
Max Mascho earned the win, allowing one unearned run in 4 1/3 innings of no-hit relief. He fanned eight and walked two.
Flynn doubled, scored one run, and had three RBI, while Davidson singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and senior Dylan Saxon added a double to account for Athens' three hits.
Sophomore Duncan Thetga was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs — four earned — on 10 hits. He fanned nine and walked none.
Flynn pitched a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit and one walk, with two strikeouts.
Gabe Cuneo was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and Max Mascho had three hits, including a double, one run scored, and three RBI to pace Wellsboro's 11-hit attack.
Athens, now 14-3, returns to action Tuesday at Hughesville.
