STAC SOFTBALL: GONZALEZ LEADS WAVERLY IN 5-2 WIN OVER WINDSOR (2025-05-12)
Valley Sport ReportWAVERLY — Eighth-grader Taylin Gonzalez turned in a strong performance in the pitcher's circle to lead Waverly to a 5-2 win over Windsor here Monday afternoon in STAC softball action.
"We played really well tonight and got outstanding pitching from Taylin Gonzalez," said Waverly coach Brent Doane. "She had full command of the strike zone tonight."
Gonzalez earned the win, allowing two runs on seven hits. She fanned 11 and walked two in seven innings.
"Taylin also stayed hot at the plate going 2-for-3, ripping a double that hit the fence, helping her own cause," noted Doane, who also lauded the play of sophomore Lecksie Douglas.
"Lecksie Douglas was tremendous tonight at shortstop," he said. "She had several plays; one of them a diving catch on a foul pop up at the fence behind third base.
"Douglas was also clutch on offense as well with a bunt single, going 2-for-3," added Doane. "She also scampered home from second on a passed ball that first scored Paige Bunniak from third ... Douglas made a heads up play continuing home from second on the same passed ball."
Gonzalez, 7th-grader Paige Bubniak, and Douglas each singled to load the bases to start the bottom of the second inning. Senior Makayla Esau knocked in a run with a fielder's choice ground to make it 1-0.
Moments later, Bubniak and Douglas both scampered home on the same passed ball to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Esau reached base on an error, moved to third on a single by senior Meghan Apgar, and scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.
Apgar later scored on a two-out RBI single by junior Maddie Cron to extend the lead to 5-0.
Windsor, which scratched out four hits in the first six innings, used a walk and three singles to close the gap to 5-2, but Gonzalez re-grouped and registered back-to-back strikeouts, and a fly ball to Esau in left field to end the game.
Gonzalez doubled and singled, and scored one run, and Douglas singled twice and scored one run to pace Waverly's eight-hit attack.
Cron singled and drove in one run in the win, while Bubniak and Apgar each singled and scored one run, Cooney singled and Esau scored one run and drove in one run.
Waverly, now 8-8 and winners of three in a row, returns to action Wednesday at Seton Catholic.
