Valley Sport ReportWAVERLY — Waverly twice rallied from two runs down, but its third comeback effort came up short in a 7-6 nine-inning loss to Windsor in STAC baseball action here Monday afternoon.
The Wolverines took the early lead with a two-out RBI single by junior Griff Walter in the bottom of the second inning.
Waverly junior Ronin Ault pitched out of bases-loaded jams in the second and third innings after returning the side in order on seven pitches in the first inning, but the Black Knights took advantage of a pair of errors to plate three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Waverly answered quickly, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Walter worked a one-out walk, and junior Cooper Robinson lined a double to left field, and junior Hogan Shaw stroked a two-run single up the middle.
Two more errors, a hit batter, and a wild pitch led to a pair of Windsor runs in the top of the seventh inning to give the Knights a 5-3 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Sam Cheresnowsky took a four-pitch walk, and Robinson reached on an infield error.
After a walk to Hogan Shaw to load the bases, freshman Jack Pipher worked a walk to force home a run and close the gap to 5-4.
With sophomore Matthias Welles at the plate, Robinson stole home on a 2-1 count to tie the game at 5-5. Two pitches later, Welles popped out to end the inning.
Windsor led off the top of the ninth with back-to-back singles, and loaded the bases with a hit batsman. The Knights scored runs on a sacrifice fly, and a squeeze bunt to take a 7-5 lead.
Cheresnowsky led off the top of the ninth with a single, but the next two batters were retired. With two outs, Pipher belted an RBI double to left field to trim the deficit to 7-6, but Waverly could not muster another hit.
Hogan Shaw singled twice and had two RBI, and sophomore Justin Koenig also singled twice to pace Waverly's eight-hit attack, while Pipher doubled and drove in two runs, and Robinson doubled and scored two runs.
Cheresnowsky singled and scored two runs for the Wolverines, while Walter singled and drove in one run, and sophomore Ben Shaw crossed the plate once.
Ault pitched seven innings in a no-decision for the Wolverines, allowing five runs — all unearned — on five hits, with three strikeouts and five walks.
Eighth-grader Axel Murray was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings of relief.
The Wolverines committed seven errors in the loss — their fourth straight.
