NTL SOFTBALL: SAYRE SNAPS SIX-GAME SKID WITH 9-8 EXTRA-INNING WIN OVER NOTRE DAME (22 PHOTOS) (2025-05-12)
Valley Sport ReportSAYRE — Sayre let a lead slip through its fingers in the top of the seventh inning, but rallied for a 9-8 eight-inning win over Notre Dame in non-league softball action to snap a six-game losing skein here Monday afternoon at Riverfront Park.
The Crusaders built a 3-0 lead after two innings, but the Redskins rallied in the bottom of the third inning.
Freshman Emily Strickland led off the inning with a single, and scored on an RBI triple by junior Olivia Thompson, who scored on a groundout off the bat of freshman McKenna Parrish to close the gap to 3-2.
Junior Rylee Lantz reached on an error, and senior Raegan Parrish walked to re-ignite the rally. Both scored on a two-RBI double by senior Abbie McGaughey that put the Redskins up 4-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Strickland and McKenna Parrish each stroked singles, sandwiched around a walk to Thompson, to load the bases. The Redskins scored on a bases-loaded walk to Lantz, and a groundout off the bat of Raegan Parrish to take a 6-3 lead.
The Crusaders closed the gap to 6-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, but McGaughey blasted a 2-0 pitch over the left-field fence to lead off the home half of the frame and extend the lead to 7-5.
Notre Dame rallied to tie the game on a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the seventh, and took an 8-7 lead on an error.
In the bottom of the inning, Lantz led off with a single, and scored on an RBI double Raegan Parrish, who advanced to third on the throw home. After intentional walks to McGaughey and sophomore Mikyah Brown to load the bases, Notre Dame turned a 1-2-3 double play, and registered a fly ball to center field to send the game into extra innings.
Raegan Parrish pitched around a two-out walk in the top of the eighth, then stroked a walk-off RBI single to end the game in the bottom of the inning.
Strickland led off the inning with a single up the middle, and took third on a double by Thompson. An intentional walk to McKenna Parrish loaded the bases, and set the stage for Raegan Parrish's one-out heroics.
Thompson was 4-for-4 with a walk, a triple, a double, two runs scored and one RBI to lead Sayre's 14-hit attack, while Strickland stroked three singles and scored three runs, and McGaughey homered and singled, scored one run, and drove in three runs.
Raegan Parrish doubled and singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs in the win, while Lantz singled, scored two runs, and had one RBI, McKenna Parrish singled and drove in one run, and Brown added a single.
Parrish earned the win, allowing eight runs — six earned — on eight hits, while striking out 11 and walking eight in eight innings.
Sayre, now 3-12, returns to action Tuesday at Troy.
