NTL BASEBALL: ATHENS OUTSLUGS CANTON IN 15-7 WIN (2025-05-14)
Valley Sports ReportCANTON — Athens jumped on Canton early, but needed a late surge to pull away for a 15-7 six-inning win here Wednesday afternoon in NTL baseball action.
The Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the first inning in a rally that featured an RBI double by sophomore Brendan Cooke and an RBI single by sophomore Connor Davidson, but the Warriors rallied to close the gap to 6-5 after two innings, and tied the game at 7-7 after four innings.
In the top of the fifth inning, Athens loaded the bases on an error and two walks, then took an 8-7 lead on a wild pitch.
Davidson then stroked a two-RBI single to make it 10-7, and two pitches later Cooke ripped an RBI double to cap the rally at 11-7.
After sophomore Kam Wheeler struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth, Athens plated four more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 15-7 lead.
Juniors Eli Chapman and Karson Sipley started the rally with walks, moved up a base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Canton error.
With two out, Wheeler stroked a two-RBI single to cap the scoring.
Wheeler then pitched around a one-out walk in the home half of the sixth, striking out the final two batters to end the game as it was called after the sixth inning due to darkness.
Davidson singled twice, scored two runs, stole two bases, and had three RBI, while Cooke doubled twice, scored one run, and had three RBI, Hobday singled twice, scored three runs, and had two RBI, and Wheeler singled twice, scored one run, and had three RBI to pace Athens' nine-hit attack.
Chapman singled, stole three bases, and scored one base in the win, while senior Troy Rosenbloom scored four runs, Sipley scored two runs, and senior Dylan Saxon crossed the plate once.
Wheeler earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of no-hit relief. He fanned six and walked one.
Athens, now 15-3, wraps up the regular season Thursday at Hughesville.
