HORSEHEADS — Senior Breanne Robinson didn’t have the most confidence heading into Thursday’s Section IV Girls’ Golf Championships, but it took just one hole for the confidence to rise.

As the round went on, Robinson was able to earn herself a trip to States, shooting a round of 92, tying for sixth place.

“I wasn’t too confident, but it spiked on the first hole,” Robinson said.

Robinson had a bogey on the first hole, but all of her shots were feeling good, which boosted the confidence level.

“It spiked the first hole a lot. I got a bogey, but my drive was good, my chips were good, my putts were good,” Robinson said.

And, the Waverly senior was playing with a good group of girls, which just made the day even better.

“When you play with girls who are nice and talkative, that helps a lot too,” Robinson said.

For Waverly coach Sam Cole, it’s special to see Robinson heading to States.

“Going into sectionals, we focused a lot on slowing down and cleaning up our short game,” Cole said. “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to go to States one more time with Bre and watch her represent Waverly.

“Our girls gave it their all this season, and I think we saw a lot of great successes as a team and as individuals,” added Cole.

The Waverly senior made states as a sophomore, but didn’t make it back last year.

After missing states a year ago Robinson is happy to be headed back this year.

“(I wanted it) a lot,” Robinson said. “It’s my senior year, last year, last try. It meant a lot to me.”

It wasn’t a perfect day, but it was good enough to get Robinson to states.

“Pretty good, except a couple shots, but apparently that didn’t slow me down too much,” Robinson said.

The whole spring has been pretty tough with weather.

“It’s made it a little tough, the courses have been pretty good,” Robinson said. “But, you still do good. You still have to hit your shots.”

Thursday was drier than a lot of the spring has been, but it still was rainy at times.

“Apparently I play better in the rain,” Robinson said.

Now, it’s onto states to wrap up her career. States is June 8-9 at Wild Wood Country Club in Rush, N.Y.

“It’s going to be nice,” Robinson said.

Waverly finished third as a team at 418. Lansing won at 385, followed by Corning at 410.

Senior Lauryn DeLill finished 19th for Waverly with a 108, followed by teammates junior Sophia Sileo and Addison Hunt, both at 109, and junior Olivia Cheresnowsky at 110. Freshman Emilia Mitchell finished 33rd at 123.
