DISTRICT 15 LITTLE LEAGUE (11U): ATHENS RALLIES TO EDGE SAYRE, 3-2; GAME ENDS ON TRIPLE PLAY (2025-06-24)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Athens scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete a come-from-behind, 3-2, win over Sayre, but only after a game-ending triple play in the top of the sixth in the consolation bracket semifinals of the District 15 Little League 11U baseball playoffs here on a hot Monday evening.
Athens will host Wellsboro Thursday in the consolation bracket finals, with the winner to take on Blue Ridge in the championship round Saturday at Athens.
For three innings, Athens hurler Beau Hall and Sayre ace Xander Parrish matched zeroes through the first three innings.
Lucas Wolcott led off the top of the fourth inning with a single, and later scored on a wild pitch to give Sayre a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, Colton Nasoni was hit by a pitch. He later scored on a dropped third strike to make it 2-0.
Athens answered in the bottom of the fourth. Leo Loziere led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Landon Briggs, who took third on a double by Bentley Stephens.
Briggs tagged up and scored on a short pop fly behind shortstop off the bat of Grant Campbell to tie the game at 2-2.
Stephens relieved for Athens in the fifth inning, and worked around two walks to send the game into the home half of the inning at 2-2.
Lincoln Miller led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double, and scored on a one-out error to give Athens a 3-2 lead.
Wolcott and Parrish led off the bottom of the sixth inning with back-to-back singles. Nasoni followed with a line shot that Campbell snared at shortstop and turned into a game-ending 5-6-4 triple play.
Stephens doubled and singled to pace Athens' eight-hit attack, while Landon Briggs singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, Miller doubled and scored one run, and Loziere tripled and scored one run.
Campbell doubled and drove in one run in the win, while Hall and Brennan Congdon each added a single.
Hall allowed two runs on two hits, while striking out five and walking two in four innings in a no-decision for Athens.
Stephens earned the win in relief, striking out two and walking two in an inning of one-hit relief, and Loziere allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of relief to record the save.
Wheeler singled twice to pace Sayre's four-hit attack, while Parrish and Jackson Shannon each added one single.
Parrish was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing three runs — two earned — on eight hits, while striking out seven and walking none in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Beckett Blythe struck out the only batter he faced in relief.
