ATHENS' McGRATH TOSSES SECOND NO-HITTER IN A ROW

WYSOX — Athens finished off a dominant run through the District 15 Little League Majors Division softball playoffs with a 13-3 four-inning win over Towanda in the championship game here Friday evening.

Athens completed a 7-0 run through the District 15 playoffs, in which it outscored its opponents, 79-23. 

Athens got better as the tournament progressed as evidenced by its title game win over Towanda, which it beat 5-4 in the opening game of pool play. Athens beat RTL, 5-2, in the second game of pool play, then beat them 10-4 in the quarterfinals.

Athens led the game from wire-to-wire, opening the game with four runs in the top of the first inning.

After Towanda answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, Athens ace Molly McGrath, who tossed her second straight no-hitter, shut them down for the final three innings.

Athens scored one run in the second inning, then plated six runs in the third inning to extend its lead to 11-3.

Athens plated two runs in the top of the fourth to make it 13-3 and bring the 10-run rule into play.

In the bottom of the fourth, McGrath walked the first batter, then struck out the next two and fielded a bunt cleanly for the final out in the game.

McGrath fanned five and walked eight to earn the win. McGrath did not allow a hit in the final 11 1/3 innings of the District 15 playoffs.

Haylee Bickhart tripled, scored one run, and drove in two runs, while Bryn Bishop singled, scored two runs, and knocked in two runs, Ameilia Archibald singled and knocked in one run, and Sophia Barrett singled and scored one run to account for Athens' four hits.

Harper Liechty and Khloe Butcher each scored a pair of runs, while Brooklyn Watkins drove in two runs, and Sadie Wanck, Lucy Cole, Molly McGrath and Terriana Orshal scored one run. 

Athens now advances to Sectional play.
