SECTION III LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL (MAJORS): WARRIOR RUN PULLS AWAY LATE; TOPS ATHENS, 12-7, IN SECTIONAL OPENER (8 PHOTOS) (2025-07-02)
Valley Sports ReportEAST TROY — Warrior Run led wire-to-wire, but needed a late surge to pull away from Athens in a 12-7 win here Tuesday evening in the opening round of the Section III Majors Division softball playoffs.
Warrior Run took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but Athens answered on back-to-back doubles by Sadie Wanck and Harper Liechty and an RBI single by Bryn Bishop to close the gap to 4-2.
Warrior Run scored three more runs in the top of the third inning to extend its lead to 7-2, but Athens answered in the home half.
Brooklyn Watkins and Ameilia Archibald walked to start the inning, and Kendall Butcher laid down a bunt single to load the bases.
After a walk to Sophia Barrett forced home a run, Liechty singled home a run to make it 7-4.
Bishop knocked home a run with a two-out fielder's choice, and Lucy Cole's bases-loaded walk trimmed the deficit to 7-6.
Warrior's Run answered with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, while keeping Athens off the board to push its lead to 12-6.
Bishop drove in the game's final run with an RBI single to plate Liechty, who reached on a triple.
Liechty was 3-for-3 with a triple and a double, two runs scored, and two RBI, Bishop singled twice and had three RBI to pace Athens' seven-hit attack, while Wanck tripled and scored one run, Kendall Butcher singled and scored one run, and Barrett scored one run and drove in one run.
Athens returns to action Wednesday against Jersey Shore at 5:30 p.m. at Alparon Park.
