NTL GOLF: SAYRE COACH EXPECTS IMPROVEMENT FROM TEAM IN 2025 (2025-08-10)

SAYRE — The Sayre golf team opens its season Monday at the Towanda Country Club and second-year coach Jordan Claypool is confident the Redskins will show some improvement in 2025.

"I was able to recruit a few players to join the team this season, we have five on the varsity roster as of now, and one who may join the team soon.

I feel confident we can perform well during some matches this season," Claypool said.

Claypool expects junior Shaine Strickland and sophomore Caleb Grover to lead the Redskins 2025.

"Shaine Strickland is a key returner this season, he performed well last season and I expect him to improve this season," said Claypool.
 
"Caleb Grover is also returning and has shown improvement during practice," he added.

Juniors Jordan Brown and Paige Secrist are newcomers, but Claypool is expecting good things from them.

"A couple newcomers to the team — Paige Secrist and Jordan Brown — have been practicing during the offseason and have been hitting the ball well in practice," he said.

Junior Bailee Forbes, and ??, ?? will also vie for time in the starting line-up.

The Redskins graduated a trio of seniors from last year's team in Brayden Schrader, Liam Barry, and Paul Abbey. 

"All three made significant contributions to the team last season and will be missed this year," said Claypool.

The Redskins are coming off a 0-36 season in 2024, but Claypool thinks they can avoid a repeat performance in 2025.

"I expect the team to be more competitive as the year goes on," he said. "There will be some changes to the schedule the team will need to adjust to, but I expect Sayre to be competitive and it would be nice to get a win in one of the matches this year. 

"They will certainly have goals heading into each match, team goals, scores to break, etc.," he added. 

Claypool expects the NTL to be competitive, but sees Athens as the team to beat.

"The NTL is very competitive," he said. "I know Athens still has a lot of star power, but (Monday) we will get to see each school in action and we will see how that match goes."

Sayre will also play at River Valley Golf Course in Westfield, Pa. On Thursday in the second NTL match of the season.
