NTL VOLLEYBALL: FIRST-YEAR SAYRE COACH TAKES ON REBUILDING PROJECT (2 PHOTOS) (2025-08-14)
By TIM BIRNEYValley Sports ReportSAYRE — Colby Sangrey has the playing credentials and a solid assistant coaching background. Now, he'll take on a serious rebuilding project as the head volleyball coach at Sayre.
Sangrey, who played volleyball collegiately at South Dakota State and East Stroudsburg, was an assistant coach at North Penn-Liberty for four years.
He spent a year as an official before moving to Sayre to take a position in the District as a math teacher.
Sangrey said he'll definitely be applying some of the lessons he learned coaching in the powerhouse NP-L program. He takes over a Redskin program that has dropped 66 straight decisions.
"It was really a blessing to start in a program that was already established, and had a lot of success.
"I coached under Mitch Stetter and I learned a lot from him coaching-wise," said Sangrey. "Because being a player and being a coach are two different things.
"I'm excited to bring a lot of that stuff over here and see how it translates," he added.
Sangrey's philosophy is simple.
"I am defense first, keep the ball alive, then find ways to put it down.
With the girls hustling the way they have been, I think we're going to do well with that," he said.
Sayre will scrimmage in a multi-team event at Dallas on Aug. 23, and then will open the regular season at home against North Penn-Liberty on Aug. 26, then play at defending Class AA District champion Wellsboro.
