NTL VOLLEYBALL: NUMBERS, ENERGY, HUSTLE HAS NEW SAYRE COACH OPTIMISTIC AS 2025 PRESEASON BEGINS (16 PHOTOS) (2025-08-14)
By TIM BIRNEYValley Sports ReportSAYRE — First-year coach Colby Sangrey takes over a Sayre volleyball program at rock bottom, but as preparation for the 2025 season begins he see things turning around.
"We have 14 — two seniors, one junior, nine sophomores and three freshmen," he said. "We have 14 despite six graduating last year, and there are 19 kids at the junior high level.
"Things are picking up, and I'm hoping you see a big upturn in the program."
Sangrey likes what he's seen so far in preseason.
"We have a really young group, but there is lots of energy and they are really hard workers," he said. "We're young, but they come with experience because a lot of our sophomores saw time as freshmen last year.
"I think we're looking at a lot of progress this season ... we really don't have any number goals set or anything, but if the kids continue to hustle, the wins will come.
"I think we're going to do a lot of good things on the court," added Sangrey.
Sayre will scrimmage in a multi-team event at Dallas on Aug. 23, and then will open the regular season at home against North Penn-Liberty on Aug. 26, then play at defending Class AA District champion Wellsboro.
"It's a tough start to the season, but it will be a good test, and we'll get to see where we stand and what we need to work on.
