NTL GIRLS SOCCER: WELLSBORO BLANKS ATHENS, 2-0, IN SEASON-OPENER (15 PHOTOS) (2025-08-26)

Valley Sports Report
ATHENS — Wellsboro scored in the 15th minute of the game, and made it stand, adding an insurance goal late in a 2-0 season-opening win over Athens here Tuesday in a key early-season NTL girls soccer match-up.

"I could not possibly be disappointed with our effort," said Athens coach Rich Pitts.

"We had a ton of chances, and just could not bury them," he added.

Haylie Smith took advantage of a defensive misplay by Athens, and put the Hornets up 1-0 with 25:04 remaining in the first half.

Neither team could dent the other's defenses until Kate Bryant bent a corner kick into the Wildcat net to make it 2-0 with 8:13 remaining in the contest.

Athens had an 11-8 edge in shots-on-kick, and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Annika Lezak had six saves in net for the Wildcats, while Jadyn Dunlap recorded 11 saves for the Hornets.

Athens returns to action Thursday when it hosts Towanda.
