IAC BOYS SOCCER: MARATHON MASTERFUL IN SEASON-OPENING WIN OVER TIOGA (20 PHOTOS) (2025-08-27)
Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER — First-year coach Donnie Van Dusen expected a learning curve for his young Tioga team in 2025, and Marathon offered up a Master's class on the pitch here Wednesday afternoon in a 12-0 season-opening win in IAC boys soccer action.
Marathon scored on a corner kick just 72 seconds into the game, and its fast-paced, one-touch offense just kept scoring.
The Olympians led 5-0 midway through the first half, and 8-0 at the intermission.
"We seemed a bit out of sorts in the first half," said Van Dusen.
"In the second half, we looked better positionally ... but communication-wise it was not there all game.
"Hats off to Marathon though, they are a well-coached team and very disciplined," added Van Dusen.
Tioga's best scoring chance in the first half came with 23:21 remaining after senior James Miller was knocked down on a run toward the net, and junior Brady Landmesser's direct kick from 40 yards out was stopped by a diving Marathon keeper at the far post.
We are going to put our head down and keep grinding," said Van Dusen.
Marathon had a 22-2 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Tioga keeper David Van Dusen recorded 10 saves.
