STAC BOYS SOCCER: NORWICH NIPS WAVERLY, 1-0 (2025-08-28)

Valley Sports Report
NORWICH — Norwich scored the game's lone goal midway through the first half, and made it stand in a 1-0 win over Waverly here Thursday in STAC boys soccer action.

"It's a tough loss," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. (Norwich) played strong and aggressive, and we weren’t able to match that energy until it was too late.

"We made some mistakes in critical moments that led to the loss.

"We will come back next week with a stronger mindset and work ethic on the field," he added. "The boys played hard and played every second hard in what was a very physical game."

Norwich had a 14-10 edge in shots-on-goal.

Rankin singled out a pair of players on the defensive end.

"Aiden Doherty had some phenomenal saves. with three of them being one-v-one.

"Eighth-grader Ian Johnston came up in clutch in the second half," said Rankin. "He’s a natural center-back ... he’s physical, cool under pressure, and fights for the ball."

Doherty recorded 12 saves in net for the Wolverines.

Waverly, now 0-2, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Oneonta.
