FROM THE PRESS BOX: WAVERLY-TROY GAME HIGHLIGHTS SCHEDULE — WEEK 2 PICKS (2025-08-29)

Football season kicks off in New York this week, and Waverly will host Troy in the "Game of the Week."
As for the pigskin prognosticators last week? Well, it wasn't good.
The Mick led the way at 6-2, while the rest of us were 4-4.
Without further ado, let us move on to our Week Two picks (even though it's Week 1 in Pa. and Week Double-Zero in N.Y.):
Troy (1-0) at Waverly: The Wolverines open the season against defending PIAA Class AA state champion Troy, which opened the season last Friday with a 57-8 win at Sayre.
This is a game that will feature a pair of talented lines, and a lot of athletes all over the field for both teams.
The difference in the game could be Troy workhorse running back Brendan Gilliland, who was a key cog in the Trojans' state title run.
Prediction: Troy will have four weeks of practice and one game under its belt by game time, while Waverly will have had 11 practices. I have to wonder how much of an impact that will make. ... I also wonder if Waverly has the team speed to match Troy's. ...
TROY 30, WAVERLY 17.
The Mick: Troy 28, Waverly 21 ...
Country Bob: Troy 35, Waverly 21 ...
Little Red: Troy 35, Waverly 14.
Windsor vs. Tioga @ Waverly's Memorial Stadium: Tioga won the meeting between these two teams at Waverly in Week Zero, but ultimately saw its six-year run atop Section IV, Class D come to an end.
The Tigers were ravaged by injuries in 2024, but still managed a 7-4 record, losing twice to Class D champ Delhi, once to Class C champ Chenango Forks, and once to Class C runner-up Waverly, and they have a ton of talent returning.
The only significant benefit from all of Tioga's injuries last season is that many underclassmen saw more playing time than expected, and are way ahead of where they would have been heading into 2025.
Prediction: The Tigers have a lot of weapons, and they're hungry. Windsor lost its best play-maker, and several started on both sides of the ball. ...
TIOGA 31, WINDSOR 15.
The Mick: Tioga 44, Windsor 24 ...
Country Bob: Tioga 42, Windsor 6 ...
Little Red: Tioga 35, Windsor 14.
Athens (1-0) at Northwest Area (0-1): The Wildcats are coming off an impressive 47-27 win over South Williamsport in Week Zero, while the Rangers dropped a 17-6 decision at Canton.
Junior QB Connor Davidson was sensational in the win over South Williamsport, and I expect more of the same tonight.
Prediction: I said Athens would finish 9-1, and people thought I was crazy. A few more people will see it my way by the end of Friday night. ...
ATHENS 54, NORTHWEST 6.
The Mick: Athens 48, Northwest 8 ...
Country Bob: Athens 49, Northwest 0 ...
Little Red: Athens 42, Northwest 6.
NP-Mansfield (1-0) at Sayre (0-1): The Redskins are coming off a 57-8 loss to Troy, while the Panthers topped Wyalusing, 21-14.
The Redskins will be missing two or three players due to injuries sustained against Troy, and that's too bad. I thought Sayre did some good things in the early-going last week, and could be competitive against Small School foes if at full strength.
Prediction: NP-M's Luke Kreger will be the difference in this game. ...
NP-M 36, SAYRE 6.
The Mick: NP-M 38, Sayre 6 ...
Country Bob: NP-M 42, Sayre 6 ...
Little Red: NP-M 35, Sayre 6.
South Williamsport (0-1) at Canton (1-0): The Mounties are coming off a 47-27 loss at Athens in Week Zero, while the Warriors pulled out a 17-6 win over Northwest.
Prediction: I think Canton is a little better than most people think, but I also think South Williamsport is going to be pretty solid by year's end. ...
SOUTH 20, CANTON 13.
The Mick: Canton 15, South 14 ...
Country Bob: South 21, Canton 13 ...
Little Red: Canton 34, South 14.
Hughesville (0-1) at Towanda (0-1): The Black Knights are coming off a 38-0 loss at Cowanesque Valley, while the Spartans dropped a 14-6 decision at Montgomery.
Prediction: I think Hughesville bounces back a little higher than Towanda. ...
HUGHESVILLE 20, TOWANDA 15.
The Mick: Hughesville 24, Canton 6 ...
Country Bob: Hughesville 28, Towanda 6 ....
Little Red: Hughesville 21, Towanda 7.
Montgomery (1-0) at Warrior Run (1-0): The Red Raiders topped Hughesville, 14-6, while the Defenders bested Muncy, 21-7.
Prediction: This is a tough one, but I'll take Warrior Run. ...
WARRIOR RUN 27, MONTGOMERY 22.
The Mick: Montgomery 16, Warrior Run 13 ...
Country Bob: Warrior Run 28, Montgomery 6 ...
Little Red: Warrior Run 21, Montgomery 14.
Cowanesque Valley (1-0) at Wyalusing (0-1): The Indians are coming off a 38-0 win over Towanda, while the Rams dropped a 21-14 decision at NP-M.
Prediction: CV raised a few eyebrows with its Week Zero dismantling of Towanda. I think it's much closer, but I think they make it 2-0. ...
CV 22, WYALUSING 16.The Mick: CV 28, Wyalusing 6 ...
Country Bob: CV 34, Wyalusing 13 ...
Little Red: CV 34, Wyalusing 13.
Muncy (0-1) at Wellsboro (0-1): The Hornets were shellacked 58-0 by Montoursville, while the Indians dropped a 21-7 decision to Warrior Run.
Prediction: Again a tough call, but I'll take the road team. ...
MUNCY 26, WELLSBORO 12.
The Mick: Muncy 21, Wellsboro 7 ...
Country Bob: Muncy 42, Wellsboro 13 ...
Little Red: Muncy 42, Wellsboro 7.
