NTL CROSS COUNTRY: ATHENS GIRLS EARN SPLIT IN TRI-MEET; WILDCAT BOYS DROP A PAIR (14 PHOTOS (2025-09-02)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — The Athens girls earned a split, topping Northeast Bradford, but falling to Sullivan County, while the Wildcat boys dropped a pair of decisions here Tuesday afternoon in the season-opening cross country tri-meet at Round Top Park.
“Coach (Scott) Riley, coach (Olivia) Nittinger and myself saw a lot of positives tonight," said Athens cross country coach Mike Bronson.
"In each race, we had people compete hard, and it was the first race ever for several of our kids.
"We still have a lot of work to do, but this gives us a good starting point," added Bronson.
GIRLS
Athens 23, NEB 38
Sullivan 26, Athens 31Athens sophomore Alissa Vough posted the fastest time of the day, clocking in at 21:46, well ahead of Sullivan's Zoey Reese (22:25) and NEB's Sophie Bennett (23:09), who finished second and third, respectively.
Ava Hughes was eighth overall in a time of 27:12, while Carolyn Roelle and Marlene Roelle were ninth and 10th, respectively, in a time of 27:12, and Adeline Burnett was 11th in 27:40.
Athens' Hailey Horton (28:26), Grace Ellsworth *29:48) and Tatyana Nasser (30:02) finished 12th through 14th, respectively.
BOYS
NEB 23, Athens 34
Sullivan 25, Athens 31Jacob Shores and Matt Rossettie each finished in the top five, but Athens dropped decisions to NEB and Sullivan County.
Shores finished second in 18:10, and Rossettie was fifth in 19:10.
Parker Wanck was 12th for the Wildcats in 20:47, while Andrew DeForrest was 14th in 23:53, and Micah Simale was 16th in 23:54.
Kamdyn Knapp (31:08), Zach Townsend (31:37) and Darius Miller (31:40) finished 20th through 22nd, respectively, for Athens.
Athens will run Saturday at the Forbes Invite in Oneonta.
JUNIOR HIGH
Boys
Rowan Morales (11:16) finished second for Athens, and Nicco Rossettie (12:14) placed eighth.
Girls
Evelyn Owen (12:48) finished second, and Sadie Wanck (13:04) and Allie Lyon (13:06) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to pace Athens.
Paisley Smith finished 11th in 14:29 for the junior Wildcats.
