H.S. VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS SWEEPS WAVERLY FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON (24 PHOTOS) (2025-09-02)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Athens got off to a fast start and cruised to a sweep of Waverly here Tuesday night in non-league volleyball action.
The night did not get off to a good start for the Wolverines in their first-ever game in the new Waverly gymnasium.
After a side-out gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, junior Meg Wiles served up 12 consecutive points for a 13-0 lead on the way to a 25-14 win in the first set.
Athens and Waverly battled even early in the second set, but Athens pulled out a 25-21 win, then closed out the night with a 25-14 win in the third set.
Wiles recorded 14 setter assists and three service aces, junior Hannah Parrish doled out 12 assists, and sophomore Ellie Mosher had six kills, nine digs, and 18 serve-receptions.
Freshman Kayla Forbes had seven digs, five serve-receptions and two aces in the win, while junior Lainey Vosburgh had 12 serve-receptions and 12 digs, and junior Ella Raynor registered seven kills.
Junior Gretchan Hiley had five kills for the Wildcats, while junior Emma Mallore added four kills and two blocks, and senior Regan McDaniel chipped in with four kills and two aces.
Junior Emma Richards-Randall had three kills, three aces, and 10 assists to lead Waverly, while senior Brilynn Belles had 14 digs and two kills, junior Ava Heath recorded four digs, senior Addison Hunt added four kills, and sophomore Emma Williams chipped in with four aces.
Athens, now 1-2, hosts NP-Liberty Thursday, while Waverly (0-1) travels to Norwich Thursday.
