NTL VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS DROPS FIVE-SET CLASSIC TO TOWANDA (24 PHOTOS) (2025-09-09)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Athens won two of the first three sets, but Towanda rallied for a 3-2 win here Tuesday night in NTL Large School Division volleyball action.
The Wildcats pulled out a 25-23 decision in the first set, but the Black Knights answered with a 25-19 win in the second set.
After Athens won the third set, 25-16, Towanda responded with wins of 25-22 and 15-9.
"It was a hard-fought match tonight," said Athens coach Heather Darrow. "Towanda was incredibly scrappy.
"Losing Regan (McDaniel) in the fourth set affected our energy," noted Darrow. "She really gets the girls fired up.
"The girls had moments of pure brilliance and playing all out, and the next moment we would have a communication error.
"The girls are gaining more and more experience with each game and will continue to put it together," added Darrow. "I'm proud of the fight the girls have and we will continue to work hard and fight hard."
Sophomore Ellie Mosher led Athens with 15 kills and 16 digs, while junior Meg Wiles had 17 setter assists and four service aces, and freshman Kayla Forbes had 16 digs, two aces, and 21 serve-receives.
Sophomore Lainey Vosburgh recorded 21 digs and 45 serve-receives for the Wildcats, while junior Gretchan Hiley had eight kills and three blocks, and junior Hannah Parrish dished out seven assists.
"Our setters Meg Wiles and Hannah Parrish) are running their butts off," said Darrow. "And, Ellie Mosher played incredible tonight, swinging away and playing all around. I'm very proud of her and the role she has taken on being just a sophomore."
Athens, now 1-4, returns to action Thursday at Wellsboro.
