STAC GIRLS SOCCER: LATE PK LIFTS SETON CATHOLIC TO 2-1 WIN OVER WAVERLY (2025-09-10)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Seton Catholic scored on a penalty kick with 13 minutes remaining to pull out a 2-1 win over Waverly here Wednesday evening in STAC Central Division girls soccer action.
"Seton is much stronger this year and we made some costly mistakes that gave them the edge," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan.
"We improved from the first half to the second, and had some great passing combinations.
"Seton crowded the middle of the field and that was enough to throw us off, which made us have to work the outside of the field more," added Hogan. "This was enough to throw us off and extremely limited us from getting quality shooting opportunities."
Late in the first half, Seton Catholic took advantage of a Waverly defensive miscue to score from point-blank range, and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
With 29 minutes remaining in the game, sophomore Maci Wheeler bent a corner kick just inside the far post to tie the game at 1-1.
"Maci’s corner kick was amazing," said Hogan. "It was unexpected and so well done."
With 8:48 remaining in the contest, Waverly was whistled for an illegal tackle inside the 18, and Seton's Sarah Lewis converted the penalty kick to make it 2-1.
Seton Catholic had a 13-11 edge in shots-on-goal, while Waverly had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Taylin Gonzalez recorded 11 saves in net for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 1-3-1, hosts Owego Friday night at 7 p.m.
