STAC BOYS SOCCER: STATE-RANKED CHENANGO FORKS PULLS AWAY FROM WAVERLY (23 PHOTOS) (2025-09-16)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly played unbeaten Chenango Forks, ranked sixth in Class B in New York State, close for about 20 minutes, but the Blue Devils pulled away for a 9-1 win here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division boys soccer action at Memorial Stadium.
"Forks is a very strong program and their guys play incredible," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. "We were able to hang with them for the first 20 minutes ... (but) for the last 15 or so everything fell apart.
We got beat physically and then mentally," noted Rankin. "After halftime, we ended up playing much much better. We had a few opportunities in the second half that were close to success.
"Aiden Doherty stepped up big and made some very important saves for us," added Rankin. "He stopped several one-on-one attempts by Forks. I couldn’t ask for more from him."
Forks scored three goals in the early going, before senior Peyton Robinson closed the gap to 3-1 with Waverly's lone goal of the game midway through the first half.
Forks scored three goals in less than 10 minutes before the intermission to take a 6-1 lead.
The Blue Devils scored on a PK about 15 minutes into the second half, then tacked on two more goals.
Waverly, now 1-6, returns to action Thursday at Chenango Valley.
