NTL GIRLS SOCCER: ATHENS PULLS OUT 2-1 WIN OVER WYALUSING (2025-09-16)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Senior Abby Burgess netted the game-winner late in the game to lift Athens to a 2-1 win over Wyalusing here Tuesday afternoon in NTL girls soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
It was a great job by the girls finishing the game off," said Athens coach Rich Pitts.
"I am so proud of how hard they played and kept grinding to earn the victory," he noted.
"Abby (Burgess) and Liv (Thompson) with goals and Brinley (Nichols) with two assist really put us in a good spot moving forward," added Pitts.
After a scoreless first half, senior Olivia Thompson collected a rebound off a shot from junior Brinley Nichols to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Wyalusing tied the game up just a couple minutes later when Aleta O'Connor scored from 35 yards out off an assist from Vayda Rought.
Burgess connected on the game-winner, off an assist from Nichols, with 13 1/2 minutes remaining on the clock.
Athens had a 13-10 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Annika Lezak recorded three saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 3-3, returns to action Thursday at NEB.
