IAC GIRLS SOCCER: STATE-RANKED WATKINS GLEN PULLS OUT RAIN-SOAKED, 6-3, WIN OVER TIOGA (16 PHOTOS) (2025-09-23)
Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER — Tioga jumped ahead early, but state-ranked Watkins Glen scored five unanswered goals on its way to a 6-3 win over Tioga here in a steady, sometimes heavy rain, Tuesday night in IAC girls soccer action at Haggerty Field.
"Unfortunately, it just wasn’t in the cards for us tonight," said Tioga coach Emily Potter. "We moved the ball well, connected passes, just didn’t come out on top.
"I am very proud of my girls for working hard, and not giving up once tonight," she added. "We learn from the mistakes we made tonight and fix them for Groton on Monday."
Senior Sophia Haney scored an unassisted goal about 3 1/2 minutes into the game to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead, but the Lake Hawks, ranked 14th in the state in Class B, answered about 6 1/2 minutes later on a goal by Olivia King to tie the game at 1-1.
Michaela Wheaton scored a pair of goals in a seven-minute span to give Watkins Glen a 3-1 lead with 18:27 remaining in the first half.
Ava Kelly, who also had two assists, scored with 2:28 remaining to give the Lake Hawks a 4-1 lead heading into the intermission.
Wheaton completed her hat trick about 10 minutes into the second half to make it 5-1.
Freshman Grace Howey scored a pair of goals for Tioga in the second half, sandwiched around King's second goal of the game, to provide the final margin. Haney was credited with assists on both of Howey's goals.
Watkins Glen had a 20-14 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Marcy Moniz recorded nine saves in net for the Tigers.
Tioga, now 4-3, returns to action Monday at Groton.
