NTL BOYS SOCCER: GOMBOCZ POWERS ATHENS IN 2-0 WIN OVER WILLIAMSON (8 PHOTOS) (2025-09-24)

Valley Sports Report
ATHENS — Freshman Chase Gombocz scored one goal and assisted on the other goal, and the Athens defense posted another shutout in a 2-0 win over Williamson here Wednesday night in NTL boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.

The shutout was the ninth in 10 games for the Wildcats, who have allowed just two goals this season.

"We tried some new things all over the field and looked to connect in different ways and the players adapted well," said Athens coach Travis Reynard. "There were times of struggle and frustration, but we handled it and got back on track and got another crucial win and shut out.

"Offensively, we learned that when we play two-touch good things happen," noted Reynard. "We have been preaching that all year long as a coaching staff and it finally clicked with our offensive attack at times, which was good to see.

"Defensively, we kept Williamson scoreless, which is always the goal, but we need to play better as a defensive unit and be more patient when defending," added Reynard. "We allowed too many good chances tonight that Williamson could have capitalized on."

Gombocz scored on a penalty kick about 10 minutes into the game to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

It stay 1-0 for 42 minutes when Kam Wheeler fielded a cross through the box from Gombocz and knocked it past the keeper to make it 2-0 with 27:56 remaining in the contest.

Athens had a 12-10 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Zach Fisher recorded 10 saves in net for the Wildcats.

Athens is now 8-1-1, including a 7-0-1 mark in league play, and will play Wellsboro, which is 7-1 in league play.

"We know the big test is Saturday in a rematch with Wellsboro, which is always a strong match," said Reynard. "We know they are going to come at full pace with us so we need to be ready for it and train hard the rest of the week and be at our best come Saturday."
