NTL VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS STARTS FAST, BUT TROY PREVAILS IN FOUR SETS (2025-09-25)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Athens got off to a quick start, but Troy regrouped to win a 3-1 decision here Thursday night in NTL Large School Division volleyball action.
The Wildcats won the first set, 25-17, but the Trojans answered with wins of 25-16, 25-18, and 25-21.
"We really come out that first game fired up," said Athens coach Heather Darrow. "We have to find a way to carry that through to the next sets.
"It was a heck of a game the girls played tonight," she noted. "Through ups and downs, they still fought and should be really proud of their effort.
"Compared to our first match of the season to now, we have definitely improved," said Darrow in reference to her team's loss at Troy on Aug. 28. "And that’s what we have to look at, where we started to where we are now.
"Despite the look of our record, the girls have a lot of fight in them," added Darrow.
Junior Meg Wiles led Athens with 33 setter assists and 14 digs, while sophomore Elle Mosher had 14 kills, two aces, 15 digs, and 20 serve-receptions, and junior Ella Raynor registered eight kills.
Freshman Kayla Forbes recorded 28 digs and 25 serve-receptions, while sophomore Lainey Vosburgh had 13 digs and 13 serve-receptions, sophomore Kendall Galasso added three aces and six kills, and senior Regan McDaniel chipped in with five kills.
"Meg Wiles played out of her mind tonight running the court and saving
balls, and Ella Raynor came out like a ball of fire in the first set," said Darrow.
"Ellie Mosher, one of our captains, was swinging away, and she’s only a sophomore," noted Darrow. "Kayla Forbes kept the ball alive
for us so many times.
"Lainey Vosburgh had an amazing night serving and receiving serves, and Hannah Parrish really had quite the night of defense and making a clutch roll shot at the net that gave us more opportunities to get that fourth set.
"Kendall Gallasso kept the team in check, and Emma Mallore was a big block for us tonight and helped slow down a ton of hard hits from Troy," continued Darrow. "Regan McDaniel, just like Emma, slowed those big hits down and really helped the defense out.
"And, a big shout out to a Alana Reyes for keeping the girls fired up all night," added Darrow.
Athens, now 1-8, hosts Selinsgrove in a non-league match Saturday. The JV match begins at 1 p.m.
