NTL BOYS SOCCER: ATHENS BLANKS TOWANDA, 3-0, FOR 11TH SHUTOUT OF SEASON (22 PHOTOS) (2025-10-01)

Valley Sports Report
ATHENS — Three different Athens players found the net, two off assists from freshman Chase Gombocz, in a 3-0 win over Towanda here Wednesday night in the "Kick Out Cancer" game here at Alumni Stadium.

"It was a special night," said Athens coach Travis Reynard. "We had the stands full of people from all over to support our 'Kick Out Cancer' game, and it was great to see all the support for not just the cause, but also our team as well."

Reynard said his team's offensive efforts were a little off all night.

"It wasn’t our best night, at least for the first 60 minutes," he said. "We struggled all over the field and couldn’t seem to connect a string of passes or find players feet.

"We were defensive most of the first half, which is not something we are looking to do.

"Offensively, we have to keep working as a team to score goals," noted Reynard. "We play better soccer when we are constantly moving the ball and shifting the defense of the opposition. We still need to be more creative and find ways to capitalize on chances especially as we finish out league play.

"Defensively, we were strong once again and held our own." Added Reynard. "We still have not conceded a goal in NTL play, which is a great thing to see. We need to be more physical and keep fighting all the way to the end."

Athens took a 1-0 lead about nine minutes into the game on a goal by junior Kam Wheeler, off a feed from Gombocz.

The Wildcats maintained the one-goal lead for the remainder of the half, and for nearly 30 minutes after the intermission.

With 11:13 remaining in the contest, sophomore Patrick Umber, off an assist from Gombocz, gave the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage.

About 3 1/2 minutes later, senior Eli Vogell capped the scoring with an unassisted goal.

Athens had a 14-5 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Zach Fisher recorded five saves in net for the Wildcats to post a clean sheet for the 11th time this season.

Athens, now 9-2-2, hosts Williamsport Saturday at 11 a.m.
