NTL GIRLS SOCCER: ATHENS PULLS OUT 2-1 LEAD AT CHENANGO VALLEY (2025-10-03)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Senior Lizzie Gorsline buried a long free kick into the back of the net with 6 1/2 minutes remaining in the game to lift Athens to a 2-1 win over Chenango Valley here Friday night in non-league girls soccer action.
Pitts was pleased his team was able to overcome adversity to notch the win.
"I'm super-happy for the girls," said Pitts. "They dug deep within themselves to pull out a huge win after playing (Thursday) night and not getting the result they wanted.
"On top of some girls playing hurt," added Pitts. "We are missing (McKenna) Jarvis and (Savannah) Finan, who are out with injuries."
The Wildcats took the lead about 15 minutes into the contest when sophomore Brielle Mayo played a ball to junior Delanie Patton, who lifted it up over the CV keeper from 20 yards out to make it 1-0.
Athens maintained a 1-0 for more than 45 minutes, but the Warriors scored to tie the game with 9:35 left in the contest.
About 3 minutes later, Gorsline connected on the free kick from 25 yards out to give Athens the lead.
The game didn't end without drama, however, as sophomore keeper Annika Lezak came up with a big save to preserve the one-goal lead.
Athens had a 12-10 edge in shots-on-goal. Both teams had three corner kicks.
Lezak recorded nine saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 8-6, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Williamson.
