DISTRICT 4 BOYS GOLF: HICKS LEADS CLASS AAA FIELD, OWEN MAKES CUT TO PLAY IN DAY 2 (20 PHOTOS) (2025-10-09)

ATHENS' LYON IN SIXTH PLACE IN GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

Valley Sports Report

MONTGOMERY — Athens junior Eli Hicks leads after Day 1 of the District 4, Class AAA boys golf championships, and sophomore Ty Owen also made the cut here at White Deer Golf Course.

Hicks shot a 2-over par round of 74 on the 5,917-yard, par 72 Vintage Course, while Owen was tied for fourth with a round of 82.

Jersey Shore's Carter Girton is one stroke off the lead after shooting a 75, and Selinsgrove's Mac Defazio is in third after shooting an 81.

The top two after Saturday second round at the Williamsport Country Club will qualify for the PIAA Championships.

Athens junior Lucas Grenninger shot an 87, missing the cut by two strokes, to finish 10th, while freshman Jacob Saxon was tied for 11th with an 88, and junior Peter Bertsch tied for 13th with an 89.

Hicks started his round on the ninth hole with a bogey, but he quickly got the shot back with a birdie on the 368-yard, par-4 10th hole.

After a bogey on the par-4 11th hole, Hicks recorded six straight pars before closing out the back nine with a birdie on the 443-yard par-5 18th hole for a 1-under par 35.

The front nine started beautifully for Hicks with birdies on the 340-yard, par-4 first hole, and the 465-yard, par-5 second hole to go to 2-under on the day.

Back-to-back bogeys on the third and fourth holes brought him back to even par, but with a birdie on the 335-yard, par-4 fifth hole he was 1-under again.

A double-bogey on the sixth hole, a bogey on the seventh hole, and a par — his only par on the front — put him at 39 on the front nine, and a 2-over par 74 on the day.

Owen shot a 43 on the front nine, and a 39 on the back, including his lone birdie on the 363-yard, par-4 16th hole.

Hicks and Owen return to action Saturday morning for round two at the Williamsport Country Club.

GIRLS
Athens sophomore Brooke Lyon shot a 116 and is in sixth place after Day 1 of the Girls Class AA Championships.

The top four can advance, but must shot a 100 at least one the two rounds.

Lyon is four shots behind fourth place entering Saturday's action.

Vivian Reiprish of Lourdes Regional and Lauren Brosious of Central Columbia lead the girls field after shooting opening round of 87, and Towanda's Clara Glantz is third after a 100.
