FROM THE PRESS BOX: WEEK 8 PICKS — WAVERLY HOSTS M-E IN 'GAME OF WEEK' (2025-10-10)

Another weekend of football is upon us, and Waverly hosts Maine-Endwell in a battle of state-ranked teams in the "Game of the Week."

Tioga is on the road at Groton, and Sayre travels to Towanda Friday, while Athens hosts Wyalusing Saturday afternoon for its annual Homecoming game. 

The VSR Pigskin Prognosticators are coming off another strong week. The Mick and I posted 12-0 weeks, while Country Bob was 11-1, and Little Red was 10-2.

For the season, The Mick and I are 56-15, Country Bob is 55-16, and Little Red is 52-19.

Without further ado, the VSR Pigskin Pickers make their picks for Week 8 (Week 7 in Pa. and Week 5 in N.Y.):

Maine-Endwell (2-2) at Waverly (5-0): The Wolverines are coming off a 21-20 win at Union-Endicott, while the Spartans edged Vestal, 30-27.

Waverly's offense has been very balanced, but not very flashing, grinding out scoring drives. Maine-Endwell's offense struggled through three games, but put 30 points on the board against Vestal last week.

Prediction: The Wolverines are very good up front, maybe the best in Section IV, and the Spartans struggled in the trenches against a very good bunch at Owego. ... WAVERLY 17, M-E 13.
The Mick: Waverly 23, M-E 16. ... Country Bob: Waverly 14, M-E 7 ... Little Red: Waverly 35, M-E 7.

Tioga (4-1) at Groton (2-2): The Tigers are coming off a 35-18 win over B-G, while the Red Hawks edged Sidney, 20-18.

Tioga's offense has found its identity and the defense has been very good the last couple games.

Prediction: Groton is coming off a win over previously-unbeaten Sidney, but Tioga is on a different level. ... TIOGA 46, GROTON 12.
The Mick: Tioga 24, Groton 14. ... Country Bob: Tioga 35, Groton 6 ... Little Red: Tioga 28, Groton 7.

Wyalusing (2-5) at Athens (6-1): The Wildcats are coming off a 54-7 win at Towanda, while the Rams rolled over Canton, 42-7. 

Athens has been firing on all cylinders, especially on offense, and its defense has also played well. 

Prediction: Wyalusing hasn't shown much in its passing game, and I don't think the run game will provide enough to stay in this game. ... ATHENS 56, WYALUSING 13.
The Mick: Athens 46, Wyalusing 14. ... Country Bob: Athens 37, Wyalusing 6 ... Little Red: Athens 35, Wyalusing 14.

Sayre (0-7) at Towanda (1-6): The Redskins are coming off a 47-6 loss at home to South Williamsport, while the Black Knights lost to Athens at home, 54-7.

Prediction: Towanda is getting a bit healthier, and Sayre is not. ... TOWANDA 54, SAYRE 8.
The Mick: Towanda 24, Sayre 0 ... Country Bob: Towanda 42, Sayre 6 ... Little Red: Towanda 56, Sayre 0.

Windsor (3-2) at Owego (3-2): The River Hawks are coming off a 20-6 win over Norwich, while the Black Knights topped Johnson City, 34-20.

Owego's two losses are by a combined three points — 7-6 to Chenango Forks and 8-6 to Maine-Endwell. Windsor's two losses came against Waverly (34-13) and Forks (30-7).

Prediction: Owego's defense has been outstanding, allowing just 42 points in five games, and one of those scores was a defensive TD. I don't think Windsor has enough fire power to do any better. ... OWEGO 27, WINDSOR 6.

SVEC (4-1) at Trumansburg (3-2): The Eagles are coming off a 24-22 win over state-ranked Delhi, while the Blue Raiders dropped a 31-14 decision at Oneonta.

Prediction: There aren't many teams that have will have an answer for Logan Aman, Charlie Hilbert and Jakobe Foster. I don't think Trumansburg is one of them. ... SVEC 36, T-Burg 20.
The Mick: SVEC 26, T-Burg 24 ... Country Bob: SVEC 28, T-Burg 6. ... Little Red: T-Burg 35, SVEC 13.

Greene-Oxford (0-4) at Newark Valley (2-3): The Cardinals are coming off a 35-13 home loss to Deposit-Hancock, while G-O is coming off a 44-26 los to Walton.

Prediction: Newark Valley has struggled with consistency and self-inflicted damage, but should get well tonight. ... NEWARK VALLEY 41, G-O 6.
The Mick: G-O 23, NV 15 ... Country Bob: NV 17, G-O 13. ... Little Red: NV 28, O-G 6.

North Penn (4-3) at Troy (6-1): The Panthers are coming off a 21-9 loss to Muncy, while the Trojans rolled to a 53-7 win over Wellsboro.

Prediction: Troy is once again clicking on all cylinders. ... TROY 58, NORTH PENN 6.
The Mick: Troy 55, NP 0 ... Country Bob: Troy 42, NP 6 ... Little Red: Troy 49, NP 7.

Canton (1-6) at Wellsboro (3-4): The Warriors are coming off a  42-7 loss at Wyalusing, while the Hornets dropped a 53-7 loss to Troy.

Prediction: Wellsboro is putting things back together after a few down years, while the experienced players Canton had back this year are banged up. ... WELLSBORO 41, CANTON 14.
The Mick: Wellsboro 34, Canton 7 ... Country Bob: Wellsboro 47, Canton 6 ... Little Red: Wellsboro 34, Canton 14.

South Williamsport (4-3) at Muncy (5-2): The Mounties are coming off a 47-6 win at Sayre, while the Indians topped North Penn, 21-9.

Prediction: This is a tough game to pick, and I've waffled on it all week. ... MUNCY 21, SOUTH 20.
The Mick: South 28, Muncy 12 ... Country Bob: Muncy 28, SW 14 ... Little Red: Muncy 28, SW 21.

Cowanesque Valley (3-4) at Northwest Area (2-5): The Indians are coming off a 63-0 win at CMVT, while the Rangers dropped a 62-0 decision to Montgomery.

Prediction: Cowanesque Valley has some very good athletes, who have played well against teams they should beat. Look for another big night for Dave Hess and company tonight. ... CV 54, NORTHWEST AREA 13.

Holy Redeemer (1-6) at Montgomery (6-1): The Red Raiders are coming off a 62-0 win over Northwest Area, while the Royals dropped a 30-25 decision at home to Montrose.

Prediction: The Red Raiders have rolled over the teams they should, and they should roll tonight. ... MONTGOMERY 55, HOLY REDEEMER 7.
