(UPDATED) NTL VOLLEYBALL: CANTON OUTLASTS SAYRE IN FIVE-SET MARATHON (22 PHOTOS) (2025-10-17)

Valley Sports Report
SAYRE — Canton rallied and came out on top of a back-and-forth five-set battle with Sayre here Thursday night in NTL Small School Division volleyball action.

The Redskins opened with a 25-16 win, but the Warriors answered with a 25-22 win. Sayre regained the advantage with a 25-17 win in the third set, but Canton closed out the night with wins of 25-18 and 15-10.

"I'm very proud of how hard we worked tonight," said Sayre coach Colby Sangrey. "Canton is a great team, and to be with them for five sets in both matches this season was a great way to push us, and play a lot of intense sets.

"Defensively, we were picking everything up to give our hitters opportunities to put the ball away," he noted. "We were getting some strong attacks as well to help keep them out of system, which took some pressure off our defense.

"There's some little things that we're going to clean up, but the fact that we are continuing to play with the focus and intensity that they have been at this point in the season is big, and really encouraging looking forward," added Sangrey.

Despite the loss, Sayre, now 9-7, maintains a slim edge over Canton (8-9) for the top seed in the upcoming District 4, Class A playoffs.

The Redskins will at Athens and Wyalusing next week to end the season, while Canton hosts Wyalusing and North Penn-Liberty.

Junior Yhale Doon led Sayre with 29 setter assists and 27 digs, while sophomore Reghan McGaughey registered 19 kills, 28 digs, and two service aces, and senior Rylee Lantz had 14 kills, one block, and two digs.

Sophomore Grace Russo had four aces, five assists, and 25 digs for the Redskins, while sophomore Emily Strickland had 14 digs and four assists, junior Sydney Gratkowski added five aces and seven digs, and junior Azalea McClenny chipped in with five kills and two digs.
