BLOOMSBURG — Athens sophomore Alissa Vough punched her ticket to states at the District IV, Class AA Cross-Country Championships Thursday.

“I’m really excited,” the Wildcat said.

Vough (20:01.3) took 12th overall — sixth individual qualifier not on winning team — and never wavered throughout the race as she was 12th from the mile on despite the competitiveness of the field.

“I just wanted to have a strong finish,” she said. “I wanted to do my best to compete. I knew where I was at, and I knew that I had to keep pushing, definitely stay with the pack, and stay with the girls I stayed with.”

Even facing down a strong headwind in the final 600 meters, Vough stayed strong to the finish.

“It was definitely a challenge, but you just had to keep pushing to get through it,” she said.

Her team took ninth with 231 placement points.

Senior Ava Hughes (22:44.3) was 37th, sophomore Marlene Roelle (24:02.1) took 53rd, senior Karolin Roelle (25:16.2) finished 69th, and freshman Adaline Burnett (26:08.6) was 80th.

On the boys’ side Athens (271 points) took 12th in the Class AA race.

Junior Matt Rossettie (17:57.7) led the way in 29th followed by senior Parker Wanck (18:18.7) in 35th.

Junior Jacob Shores (18:34.4) took 45th, junior Corbin Smith (20:56.9) was 93rd, and senior drew DeForest (21:34.6) came in 100th.

Sayre had two runners in the Class A boys’ race.

Junior Glen VanBenthuysen (21:38.2) came in 31st, and freshman Jayden Sinsabaugh (28:44.3) was 41st.

The PIAA Cross Country Championships are set for Nov. 1 in Hershey.
