SECTION IV GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY ADVANCES TO CLASS A FINALS WITH 2-1 WIN OVER CHENANGO VALLEY (24 PHOTOS) (2025-10-29)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Waverly scored twice in the first 16 minutes of the game, then held off Chenango Valley for a 2-1 win here Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Section IV, Class A girls soccer playoffs.
The Wolverines, who won the Class B title last year, will face state-ranked Maine-Endwell, which beat Seton Catholic 4-0, here Saturday at 11 a.m. for the Class A title.
This was the third meeting of the season for the Wolverines and Warriors. Waverly won at home, 2-1, on Sept. 17, while CV won at home, 1-0, on Oct. 8.
Longtime Waverly coach Tara Hogan said she took advantage of the 15 days since her team's 5-0 loss to Horseheads in the regular season finale.
"In the last two weeks, we have focused on recovering, keeping morale high, and working in two scrimmages against two formidable teams (Elmira and Horseheads)," said Hogan. "Those teams definitely helped us prepare for tonight.
"We tried a few new lineups against those teams, but we stuck with what we know best.
"We had a game plan to move specific players to help try and build up our offensive movement and give them more support, but we didn’t have to make those moves," noted Hogan.
"Overall, our first half was excellent. We played with confidence and composure," added Hogan. "The second half went a little differently, however."
About 7 1/2 minutes into the game, Waverly sophomore Kaylin Twedt and the CV keeper converged on a long ball in the box, getting to the ball at the same time. After a bit of contact, the CV keeper could not control the ball, and Twedt came away with the ball, and poked it into an empty net to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
"Kaylin Twedt’s goal came early and really helped set a tone for the first half," said Hogan.
"Kaylin is becoming more confident, learning what runs to make, and to use her body to run through the ball and shield," added Hogan.
With 12:47 remaining in the half, sophomore Lilly Boothby got a quick touch on the ball with her right foot to settle the ball at the top of the 18. She played it to her left, fired a shot over the keeper into the upper-90 in the left corner of the net to make it 2-0.
"Lilliana’s goal was impressive," said Hogan. "She was warming up very well and was ready when she set foot on the field. She scored just a few minutes after being put in the game."
Chenango Valley controlled the action in the second half but only managed one goal, with Tiffani Schaefer scoring with 24:12 remaining in the contest.
CV had a 20-13 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Claire Clonch recorded 15 saves in net for the Wolverines.
"It’s very nice having Haley Larrabee back in action on defense," said Hogan.
"Makenzie Olmsted) and Kendall (Rockwell) really pulled through for us tonight," she noted. "They were both very vocal and did a fantastic job shutting down key CV players.
"And Claire (Clonch) was very good tonight," added Hogan.
