SECTION IV CROSS COUNTRY: WAVERLY'S HINE, MONTANYE BOTH QUALIFY FOR STATES; LEAD WOLVERINES TO FOURTH PLACE AT CLASS C RACE (17 PHOTOS) (2025-11-06)

Valley Sports Report
CHENANGO FORKS, N.Y. — Junior Chase Hine and sophomore Hayden Montanye ran together for the entirety of the 5K Chenango Valley State Park course here Thursday afternoon at the Section IV, Class C Cross-Country Championships, and punched their tickets to States.

Hine finished sixth in the Class C race, clocking in at 18:14.0, while Montanye was seventh in 18:16.3. The duo claimed the final two qualifying spots — finishing nearly 17 seconds ahead of the eighth-place finisher.

"We are extremely proud of the efforts put in by our boys and girls at Sectional Championships," said Waverly coach Nate Culver. "We had a bulk of massive PRs from last year’s performances.

"Chase Hine and Hayden Montanye pushed together to claim two of the five individual spots for States.

"Chase was hurt last year at this point of the season, which only motivated him more to comeback for unfinished business and goals," noted Culver. "Hayden was ranked just out of the qualifying spots, but he ran with a stellar amount of determination and confidence, earning him the fifth qualifying place for States. He ran almost 40seconds faster than last year.

"The two young men from Chemung will represent Waverly at the state level for their first time at Queensbury next weekend," added Culver.

The Wolverines finished fourth in the team standings. Chenango Valley won the Class C title with 49 placement points, while Afton-Harpursville / Bainbridge-Guilford was second with 66 points, and Lansing and Waverly tied with 106 points, with the Bobcats winning the tie-breaker.

Freshman Braiden Judson finished 19th for the Wolverines in a time of 19:27.9, while freshman Colten Santalucia was 34th in 20:28.6, junior Jayden Washington was 49th in 21:31.0, and sophomore Garret Akins was 57th in 23:07.3.

The New York State Cross-Country Championships are set for Nov. 15 at Queensbury High School.

SINSABAUGH, CORRELL POST TOP-25 FINISHES
Junior Taylor Sinsabaugh finished 23rd for the Waverly girls in a time of 24:53.3, and sophomore Miah Correll was 23rd in 25:02.1.
