Valley Sports ReportCOLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — Tioga grad
Tyler Roe, a sophomore at Stevens Institute of Technology, placed third here Saturday at the Racich Rumble at Ursinus College, and also won his first dual match earlier in the week.
Roe, the fourth seed at 165 pounds, opened his day with a 19-4 technical fall in 3:43 against Trinity College's Liam Holden.
Roe scored four takedowns in the first half of the opening period, and tacked on two near-fall points after the final takedown to build a 14-3 lead.
After cutting Holden loose, Roe registered another takedown with 15 seconds left in the first period to take a 17-4 lead after the first three minutes.
Roe recorded an escape, and the match ended on a stalling point against Holden with 1:17 remaining in the second period.
In the round-of-16, Roe kept his takedown train rolling with three more in the first period against Rocco Trivelli of West Chester University to take a 9-2 lead.
Trivelli scored a reversal late in the first period, but Roe escaped to start the second period, and registered another takedown to stretch his lead to 13-4.
Trivelli scored another reversal, but Roe escaped with 4 seconds left to take a 15-6 led heading into the third period.
Roe scored two more takedown and a riding-time point in the final two minutes to win a 21-8 decision.
In the quarterfinals, Roe scored three first-takedowns on his way to a 13-7 decision over Western New England's Meghan McConnell.
With Roe leading 9-2 after the first three minutes, McConnell escaped and scored a takedown midway through the second period to close the gap to 9-6.
McConnell cut Roe loose to start the third period, and Roe sealed win with a takedown with 10 seconds remaining.
In the semifinals, top-seeded Keegan Dearest of Messiah put on a takedown clinic of his own, ringing up five to go along with three near-fall points to record a 19-2 technical fall of Roe in 6:15.
In the consolation semifinals, Roe got back on track with three first-period takedowns on his way to a 17-9 major decision over New York University's John Gleason.
Gleason trimmed the deficit to 9-5 with a second-period takedown, but Roe sealed the victory with two more takedowns in the third period.
A rematch with McConnell in the third-place match was a no-contest as both wrestlers had already reached their maximum amount of matches for the day.
On Thursday, Roe scored an early takedown and turned it in a fall at 2:28 in Stevens' 45-8 win over Arcadia College.
Stevens will wrestle a pair of duals Saturday in Providence, R.I., taking on the United States Coast Guard Academy and West Liberty University.
