H.S. GIRLS WRESTLING: FRESHMEN REEDY, ZIENIUK LEAD WAVERLY TO FIFTH-PLACE FINISH AT PHOENIX TOURNAMENT (December 12, 2025)
Valley Sports ReportPHOENIX, N.Y. — Freshman Abi Reedy and Gianna Zieniuk each took third in their weight classes to lead Waverly to a fifth-place finish at the rugged Phoenix Girls Wrestling Tournament.
Fulton won the team title with 296.5 points and four champions, while Indian River was second with 195.4 points, Phoenix was third at 189, Baldwinsville was fourth at 166.5, and Waverly tallies 144.
The Wolverines had six other wrestlers reach the podium, with senior Elona Holmes placing fourth, senior Emma Vanderhoof, sophomore Kennadie Cochrane, freshman Gianna Rylott, and 7th-grader Amelia Wright placing fifth, and junior Abby Sickler placing sixth.
Reedy was 4-1 to place third in the 165-pound bracket.
Reedy opened with a pin of Indian River's Arianna Cruz-Caranza in 2:28, then scored a 10-0 technical fall win over Indian River's Kahira Ortiz in 1:31 in the quarterfinals.
Reedy lost via fall to Cicero-North Syracuse's Aniyah Burton in the semifinals, but bounced back with a 26-second fall of Cruz-Carranza in the consolation semifinals.
In the third-place match, Reedy pinned Fayetteville-Manlius' Emma Dobrovech in 1:27.
Zieniuk also posted a 4-1 record to finish third in the 152-pound bracket.
Zieniuk opened with a 10-0 technical fall of Canajoharie-Fort Plain's Lila Clarke in 1:54, then decked Cicero-North Syracuse's Alexa Lorenzo in 35 seconds in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Zieniuk lost via tech fall to top-seed and eventual champ Gabriella Gonzalez of Phoenix, but bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a pin of Cicero-North Syracuse's Natalie Suliivan-Westcott in 1:39.
In the third-place match, Zieniuk pinned West Genesee's Layla Meany.
Holmes was 3-2 to place fourth in the 185-pound bracket.
She opened with a 47-second fall of Pheonix's Hensley Kurtz, then lost via fall to second-seed and eventual champ Graciela Vasquez of Fulton in 1:54.
Holmes bounced back with a pin of Cicero-North Syracuse's Claire Greenfield in 1:49, then pinned Cicero-North Syracuse's Zoe Patton inn 3:42 in the consolation semifinals.
In the third-place match, Holmes lost via first-period fall to General Brown's's Jasmine Ousley.
Vanderhoof was 3-2, to finish fifth in the 132-pound bracket.
Vanderhoof opened with a pair of quick falls (16 seconds and 1:13), then lost to eventual champ Riley Butler in a wild, 15-14, decision in the semifinals. Vanderhoof led 10-4 in the first period, and also led 14-10 with 45 seconds left in the second period.
Vanderhoof then lost to Fulton's Callie Trail via fall in 2:29 in the consolation semifinals.
In the fifth-place match, Vanderhoof pinned Fulton's Madalyn LaBeef in 1:36.
Cochrane was 4-2 on the day to finish fifth in the 114-pound bracket.
Cochrane scored four falls on the day, with the longest match lasting 79 seconds, which was a ping of Indian River's MyLani Baker in the fifth-place match. She led in both of her losses.
Rylott posted a 3-2 record to finish fifth in the 107-pound bracket.
Rylott won her first two bouts — the first by second-period fall, and the second via a 10-0 technical fall in 81 seconds — to reach the semifinals, where she lost via technical fall to top-seed and eventual champion Zoey Jewett of General Brown.
After a loss in the consolation semis, Rylott scored a 10-0 technical fall over Fulton's Claire Agnone in 2:45 in the fifth-place match.
Wright took fifth place in the 138-pound bracket the hard way, dropping her opening-round match, then bouncing back to win three of her next four bouts.
She scored two falls in the consolation bracket, before a loss to Fulton's Shara-Lynne Raymond in the first consolation round-of-four.
In the fifth-place match, Wright scored her quickest fall of the day, decking West Genesee's Lila Severson in 27 seconds.
Sickler was 3-3 on the day to finish sixth in the 120-pound bracket.
Sickler also lost her opening-round match, but bounced back with three straight wins — two pins, sandwiched around a technical fall.
Sickler then lost in the first consolation round-of-four and in the fifth-place match.
Eighth-grader Gabbi Sinsabaugh was 1-2 in the 126-pound weight class. She trailed 6-2 in her lone win, but pinned Fulton's Janyshia Johnson of Fulton in 1:01.
Eighth-grader Jilliana Presher was 1-2 at 152 pounds. She led 10-8 when she pinned Cicero-North Syracuse's Alexa Lorenzo at 5:07.
Seventh-grader Aniyah Rought (100 pounds), sophomore Faith Hyjek (132), freshman Natasha Lane (138), and freshman Stephanie Furlong (185) were each 0-2 in their respective weight classes.
Waverly returns to action next Saturday at the STAC Girls Wrestling Championships.
